View Full Version : No Aero with Windows 7 and USB Adapter

I'm using the RC driver on an IOgear external USB adapter for a 2nd monitor on a Windows 7 desktop. Everything works fine except the Aero features. They work on the onboard Intel 946GZ Express card when I use a single monitor, but the Windows Desktop Manager service craps out when I connect the 2nd monitor.

I have a couple of questions and things you can try. First make sure you have the latest intel graphics drivers installed. When aero stops, there will be an entry in the Event viewer under the Windows Logs section which will reference the desktop window manager and will hopefully give us some information on why aero stops. If DWM crashes, then please provide the crash information which you will find under Control Panel\System and Security\Action Center\Problem Reports (type "view all problem reports" in the start menu).
Also note that Windows will sometimes disable aero if there are not enough system resources for extended displays.

Martin, thank you for your reply. I apologize for taking so long to respond, I was out of town. My graphic driver (Intel 946gz Express) has the latest driver. When I look at the problem report it just says that "Desktop Windows Manager is disabled." (The service is not disabled, it just stops when I attach the USB graphics adapter.) Thanks for any assistance.
Here's the log info for when DWM stops:

I see on the following site that someone with similar hardware has had a similar problem.
Can you try attaching the monitor without the usb adapter?

Both of my monitors work one at a time with Aero when directly connected to my PC. It's only when I connect the USB adapter to use both monitors at once that the DWM service stops and Aero stops working. As soon as I detach the USB adapter and restart the DWM service Aero works again.

Additionally, I forced the Vista driver as the post at the Intel forum mentioned and Aero does indeed work now. It seems like an issue with the Windows 7 Intel driver.
