Refresh Rate

I am using this product that uses DisplayLink technology and I have a problem with it.

I have a CRT, a Sony Multiscan20se, and when I plug it directly into my PC, I do use a GeForce GTX 260, I can choose resolutions like 1280x1024 together with a refresh rate of 75 Hz. But when I plug the CRT into the above linked USB to DVI (with the help of a DVI->VGA adapter) I can't choose anything above 60 Hz for any resolution. With one exception, when I use 800x600 I can use 75 Hz. Where this exception comes from is a question for me too.

I have tried quite anything that is available in the net about forcing a gpu to show a specific screen refresh rate including editing the EDID but nothing has helped so far.

Please help!

Yes it is true that CRT and LCD refresh rates are not that comparable but that doesn't matter for my problem. My problem is that I can't set the CRTs refresh rate any higher than 60 Hz if I choose a resolution above 800x600. But that doesn't have to do something with the ability of the CRT. When I connect it directly (not via displaylink) to my GPU I can choose 1280x1024 with a refresh rate of 75 Hz.

I see what you're saying now. You mean the same monitor on both a GPU and DisplayLink shows you different refresh rates. Which monitor is it? Which GPU is it?

It may be a limitation of the DisplayLink technology for the chip in your monitor. DisplayLink works by integrating a GPU inside of the display which decompresses the data sent from your computer over USB. It's very possible the limitation is a driver one or the GPU itself on the monitor. I'm interested to see what the DisplayLink folks have to say.

It's an old Sony CRT - a Multiscan20se and I am using a GeForce GTX 260

Are you saying that, upon plugging in the DisplayLink monitor, the CRT's refresh rate changes to 60Hz?

I am saying that, when I plug in the CRT into displaylink I do not have an option to choose anything higher than 60 Hz in the monitor settings - that is not the case when I plug the monitor directly into my GPU.

I can't answer your question directly because the settings will be different if I switch the crt from the gpu to the displaylink adapter - so yes it will change.

You should note that you're using a USB to VGA adapter. Only now do I know that. DisplayLink is a technology, not a product.

Oh, i'm sorry I usually provide all necessary information. Haven't thought of it... sorry!

You are right I use a USB to DVI adapter with an attached DVI to VGA adapater and then comes the CRT.

Seems like that's an issue right there. I wonder, which product are you using?

It's one of those Winstar products.
