What operating system?
Surely on Linux you just do:
fbset -fb /dev/fb1 -g 1024 600 1024 600 16
(or /dev/fb0 as it may be).
My monitor doesn't support that resolution so I can't prove that it works, but it works at other resolutions that my monitor does support.
