Display resolution doesn't save when closing

I'm running two Dell 4k monitors and my displaylink works great so far. I have selected the display settings of Scaled at 1920x1080 (not the 'low resolution' selection) for both of my Dell 4Ks for my preferred resolution. The one issue I have is that when I close my laptop screen, the saved resolution reverts back to the default for my displays which is 3840x2160 even though it shows as still the selected 1920x1080. I fix it by just selecting any other resolution and then reselecting the preferred one. This can't be the fix as I'd need to do this every time. Can someone help me with this?
