I've been using the drivers with Snow Leopard for years now with decent performance. Is this thread suggesting that I will see a drastically reduced performance if I upgrade to Lion, or is this just comparing performance to a native monitor or a Windows system?

If you upgrade to Lion you probably will see reduced performance. If you have a "old" machine this is much more noticeable. Lion uses more full screen animations and we need to improve our driver performance. This will come as soon as we address all the compatibility issues.
