Default Which version of DisplayLink to use?

Hi all,
New user here. I'm trying to install the recommended version of DisplayLink software that was suggested by the manufacturer of the KVM switch I bought. It's the Startech docking station for two laptops, part# USB#DDOCKFT. It handles two monitors and two laptops. I have one W7 HP laptop connected via a DisplayPort to the KVM and the software loaded fine and seems to work. It did say that an update was required for the USB3 driver but I didn't update it as it's a work laptop and I don't have admin rights.

The other laptop is my personal one, a Sager NP6165 running W7 with an NVidia 650M GPU with the latest driver version installed: 385.41

I initially tried updating the USB 3 driver and installing suggested software.
The details are:
DisplayLink Software Release: External Release Note
Software Package: DisplayLink Graphics
Software Package Version: 8.2.1999.0
Software Package Date: 26th May 2017

DisplayLink Ethernet Driver Version: 8.2.1629.0
DisplayLink Audio Driver Version: 8.2.1638.0

Windows 7 - Windows 10 Build 10586:
- DisplayLink Core Software Version: 8.2.1956.0
- DisplayLink Core Software Date: 23rd May 2017

Unfortunately the end result was my laptop repeatedly crashing when the KVM switch was connected to the laptop. It got so bad that I finally had to do a clean install of W7.

Before I try again, I would to be certain that there won't be another conflict. Should I run older version of the DisplayLinksoftware?

Any and all suggestions appreciated....

Hello Dave,

nVidia seems to like breaking it with new drivers once a year. Fortunately, they can't anymore with Windows 10!

We would need to see the log files, like for every post you may have read in this forum, in order to formulate a pertinent reply. Older software is unlikely to help, Can you try an older nVidia driver (like last year or January this year)? This will give an indication of what takes place, but won't replace the need for logs to be analysed (3rd link in my forum signature).

Kind regards,
Alban
