Default How to tell if DisplayPort is working

I have a USB 2.0 Display Adapter HDMI 1080p but cannot see my monitor and the monitor says that there is no signal. The light on the Display Adapter is on. How do I determine whether the Display Adapter device is working or if there is a software or setup problem?
