Default Monitor goes black (disconnects?)

Hi, I have a plugable superspeed 3.0 display adapter (DL-3500) that I just purchased. I'm using it with my 2014 13" Macbook air running Yosemite to run a monitor (Dell U2414H).

The monitor goes black every once in a while, and sometimes stays that way. If I fiddle with the pluable stick sometimes it comes back on, as if there is a connection problem. Today I received a brand new 2nd plugable unit (because I thought the first was defective), I put swapped them out, and for about 5 minutes the new one worked great, then the monitor went black. Just now it came back on, it seems to be displaying ok at the moment, but it has gone off/on a few times already.

I also have a second Dell U2414H connected via mini displayport.

What can I do to ensure that the monitor doesn't go black?

Thanks
