Default Windows 8 USB 3 FIX

If your having problems with windows 8 and usb 3 using an displaylink docking station please try these custom drivers. Let me know if it resolves your issues.

I make no claims though try at your OWN RISK.

Make sure you read the "readme" first!

Sticky this post if this proves to be helpful.

Thanks,

Paul

Default Modified Intel USB 3.0 host controller

Just a note that this is a Intel Windows 7 USB 3.0 host controller driver, that has been modified to install on Windows 8.

It won't work on non-Intel USB 3.0 host controllers.

Because it has been modified, it is unsigned. To install unsigned drivers on Windows 8, you have to do a few backflips.

Full details from the author of the inf patch are here:

Carminus - did this fix your issues?

We're also seeing many customers with USB 3.0 docking stations (like our UD-3000 http://plugable.com/products/UD-3000) for whom the docking station doesn't appear reliably on the USB bus on USB 3.0 on Windows 8 -- but does work perfectly when attached with USB 2.0. And this is only with Windows 8 machines. It appears to be a problem with USB 3.0 updates that Microsoft deployed right around the time of Windows 8's release (since they weren't seen earlier in the pre-release cycle).

We'd love to provide solutions to our customers for this, but hate to point users at an unsigned driver package that replaces the Microsoft one on Windows 8 -- but right now the only alternative is plugging into a USB 2.0 port or using a USB 2.0 cable, which causes everything to drop into USB 2.0 mode and work fine.

Thanks for anyone else who can chime in here with their experiences!

I tried this but without luck.
The drivers installed, but after that the USB 3.0 port on my X1 Carbon stopped working. No recognition of connected devices.

Rolled back the driver and that "normal" state was restored.

However, my dock (Lenovo USB 3.0) is nearly not working as intended. Laggy, slow, disturbed image quality, rendering issues and so on.

Running that latest M3 drivers (this actually seems to have made everything worse).

The solution for me is to connect one monitor by VGA and just running the dock as a port-replicator for other USB devices. This works ok, but I bought the dock to give me multiple monitors, not as a USB hub.

The displaydock (SD3500v) would not work prior to the modified drivers. The native driver it would not even correctly detect the docking station. After the win 7 modified drivers it worked like a charm. I added the readme file in it when I compressed and uploaded the needed files with the credit and the forum link.

Yes, they are for INTEL USB 3 only. Sorry I forgot to post it. I am using this driver with a dell XPS 13.

Edit- I should add once I added the intel usb 3.0 extensible driver I also had to go back and install the intel usb 3.0 root hub by using the same steps as the extensible host controller. Otherwise, from what I remember the usb ports did not work until I went back and installed the hub.

Edit #2- The ultrabook xps 13 only has two usb ports the right side is usb 3, left side (where the power jack is) is usb 2. Neither worked with native drivers, now they both work fine.

Default Wide impact problem

Thanks for all those great details, Paul!

We haven't yet recreated the problem here, but hope to soon -- and then we'll validate and try to document this workaround for less advanced users.

This is a very frustrating problem with broad impact for Windows 8. Intel and Microsoft communities have long threads about all the USB 3.0 + Windows 8 problems.

Unfortunately, it impacts DisplayLink devices more heavily -- they won't appear on the USB bus at all (or at best come and go). In short, USB 3.0 docks appear to not work at all, until they're moved over to USB 2.0.

We're not certain, but it appears that all of the latest Intel Ivy Bridge systems + Windows 8 users are affected -- a huge set.

If anyone else has some other / better workarounds, we'd love to hear of them. Thanks!
