High resolution laptop displays

We're going to be replacing ~5000 laptops with the (new) Lenovo Carbon X1, which has a native resolution of 2560 x 1440. Because Windows 7 doesn't handle dpi scaling very gracefully, we're planning to roll them out at a lower, non-native resolution ( possibly 1920 x 1080 ).

However, when you plug into the Lenovo USB3.0 dock for the first time, it automatically switches back to native 2560 x 1440 (on the laptop screen). You can then manually change the resolution back to where it was, and it will usually remember that the next time you plug into the USB dock.

Given the scale of the rollout, we're estimating a large call number of support calls coming in regarding the super high resolution switch when on the USB dock. I'm wondering if there's any API, command line based tool, registry key, config file, etc - that can enable us to preconfigure the desired resolution. I have a "nivoutil.exe" command line tool from 2010 that seemed like it might have this capability, but it doesn't appear to work with the 7.x drivers. I've also seen a dl_nivo.exe tool out in the wild but am not sure how to get that.
