Max resolution not displayed and Nvidia Control Panel issues

I have a Dell monitor which supports up to 1920 x 1080. I used one of these at work with a different DisplayLink and it works fine. When I come home I have an IOGear GU2020dw6 DisplayLink adapter and the same model monitor but can only get 1280 x 1024.

In addition I can see the display in the windows resolution settings, but not in the Nvidia control panel. On the Nvidia control panel it even says I have nothing connected on display link.

FYI I had installed Nvidia 268 something version drivers on my laptop before. I just updated them to 296.88 (newest version). When the machine came back on I was able to get 1650 x 1080 or something like that on the screen, but I couldn't get the nvidia control panel to come up at all. I unplugged the displaylink and plugged it back in and now the nvidia control panel comes up bu still does not talk about the displaylink, and the max resolution of the monitor is back to 1280x1024 again (worth a shot I guess).

So, back to the drawing board...

Btw I've updated my machine with newer drivers from nvidia, uninstalled and re-installed 6.3M1 (although it still says the driver version is 6.3.38355.0, is that right?). But to no avail =/

The monitor you have reports the following modes:

Display Modes

640x480x24@60
640x480x24@75
720x400x24@70

800x600x24@75
1024x768x24@60
1024x768x24@75
1152x864x24@75
1280x1024x24@60
1280x1024x24@75
1920x1080x24@60

So if the adapter doesn't support resolutions up to 1920x1080, 1280x1024 will be the maximum resolution.

I think you have 2 adapters from IOGear. One contains our older DL-160 chip and a newer one contains the DL-165. The DL-160 will not support 1920x1080, but the DL-165 will, which is why you are seeing a difference in the adapter behaviour.

I think IOGear did a silent introduction of the new DL-165, keeping the product number the same, as the new product supported all the features of the old product and now supported 1920x1080. That's why the online description is correct for new adapters, but not correct for the first generation of this product.

So I think everything works as designed and explains why you cannot get the resolution on one of the adapters.

Hi, I'm having a similar issue on a Mac: I'm using the same IOGEAR with the latest DisplayLink driver for OSX Mountain Lion to run a 2nd external display off my Late 2010 Macbook Air.

Although I've confirmed with IOGEAR that I have the latest adaptor (with the DL-165), and they tell me normally my 2nd screen should run the maximum resolution (1920x1080), my best screen resolution remains 1600x1200...

I tried sending an e-mail to DisplayLink support but never heard back - any thoughts?

Yes, the first thought is that this should be in the Mac forum as Mac and Windows are completely different codebases so will be a different issue to this problem.

Without log files to detail exactly the adapter you have and the monitor modes reported, I don't know why this is not working.
