View Full Version : Dell Inspiron stopped detecting monitor thru DisplayLink

My Dell stopped detecting an external monitor connected to it through a Display Link Adapter. I had to do this because the monitor does not have a HDMI connection to fit into the HDMI port on the Dell.

Display Link had installed and ran the external monitor connected through it to my Dell without any problems until it stopped working.

This happened after I pulled the USB cable out of the port. When I put the USB back into the port, the Dell would not detect the external monitor. When I click on "Detect" in the Screen Resolution" dialog box that changes the settings for external monitors, it says "Another display not detected".

The USB cable is connected into a port on the computer - not through a hub.

I've uninstalled and reinstalled the Display Link drivers with no success

I downloaded the Display Link Support Tool and it found all the right things that were supposed to be there. The system compatibility tool showed everything as it should be.

I have another monitor with a HDMI cable and it works fine on the Dell.

Any suggestions on how to get the Display Link adaptor working would be appreciated.

Regards,

Joe

I connected the Display Link adapator to another computer in the office and I get the same problem.

Display Link seems to be running OK, but the system cannot detect the external monitor connected through Display Link.

I've appended the screen capture I took when trying to get Windows to identify all the external monitors connected to the computer. It shows the external monitor that is connected directly to the computer. And it shows the other monitor connected through the Display Link adaptor, but with a message alongside it saying "Another display not detected".

Help

When you connect the adapter to your notebook does the adapter appear under USB Display Adapters in Device Manager?

What if any message appears on the monitor? Does the monitor display a blue/green/amber LED?

This other monitor works fine when connected through the adapter? Sounds like a monitor issue.

Any suggestions on how to get the Display Link adaptor working would be appreciated.

James,

Thanks for getting back to me. Re your questions below:

The Adaptor does display in Device Manager.

The monitor message says "There is no signal coming from your computer..."
The monitor does not display a blue/green/amber LED - or more to the point, I don't know how to get it to do that.

The monitors work fine when connected directly to two different computers. I just cannot get either monitor to work with either computer when I connect them to the Display Link adaptor. I've cleaned and installed the latest Display Link software from the web site. I've got Windows 8.1 on one computer and Windows 7 on the other notebook.

It seems as though the adaptor knows the 2nd monitor is there but is not relaying the signal to it. I have set the display to extend to the 2nd external monitor and I can drag a window (e.g. an Excel spreadsheet) across to the monitor but the screen remains blank and black and the spreadsheet just disappears off screen in the blank monitor.

Cheers,

Joe L
