When we update the drivers using the displaylink-driver-1.3.52.run package we are always prompted to uninstall previous versions. The command for this is
sudo displaylink-installer uninstall
followed by a reboot.
Have you considered prompting the user when the previous version is detected if they wish to uninstall, reboot, and then login and reattempt the installation? It'd make for a cleaner installation.
