I'm running Debian 8.7 with Intel HD4000, the latest drivers and a Asus MB169+ screen.

With the screen on, DisplayLinkManager is using constantly 15% of one of my logical cores just idling.
If I start to drag windows or do some work in my normal (non-DisplayLink) screen, it jumps to 20-30%.
Dragging a window on the DisplayLink monitor makes it jump to 75%.
Watching a movie on YouTube in Chrome I get 140% cpu usage just from DisplayLinkManager!
Turning off the screen makes DisplayLinkManager drop down to 0%, as expected.

Is this a problem with my setup or is it normal? I'm using the openbox window manager with compton as a compositor. Killing compton doesn't seem to make a difference.

Same problem for me too. My environmente is: XPS 13 with Intel i7 7th Gen, Ubuntu 16.04, Dell Docking Station D3100, DisplayLink driver version 1.3.52. Also point out the presence, at a time when the process DisplayLInk loads the cpu high, of an annoying lag in the display on the monitor connected to HDMI outputs.

Same problem with two external monitors on ACER Aspire v3-371 notebook running Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (up-to-date) and the newest available DisplayLink driver.

My workaround at the moment: I connect one monitor with the HDMI port of the notebook and the second monitor with the HDMI port of the docking station. The CPU usage drops down and seems to run constantly on 16%!
Sadly I run into the "mouse flickering" problem, which is also a known bug/problem. So on the monitor connected to the internal notebook HDMI port has got problems to display the mouse cursor.

Same problem here with latest driver 5.2.14 on Kubuntu 19.04.
I am using two external screens (attached to a ThinkPad Hybrid USB-C with USB-A Dock using HDMI.
Simply doing nothing CPU usage is at 15-40%, when moving the mouse it jumps to 200-240%.
That's unacceptable!

I can confirm this verry annoying bug on Ubuntu 19.04 with the latest DisplayLink drivers installed. We have HUNDREDS of these docks (ThinkPad docks) in our organization... Fortunately not everyone is using Linux, but about 50 people are doing so. All suffering from this bug. Quite unacceptable. Go Fix Displaylink!

The number of pipes it has open is enormous. Clearly buggy.

I recently switched to a new work laptop that requires a (Dell) DisplayLink dock and am also seeing this issue.

The OP reported this issue more than 2 and a half years old, is there no update at all on this situation?

I am using a Dell D3100 dock with an XPS13 9365 and currently have 3 screens attached, 1 @ 3440x1440 and 2 @ 1920x1080, with the laptop screen disabled and am running KUbuntu 19.04.
kWin_x11 will use 20 to 40% CPU when connected to the dock and DisplayLinkManager will use 20 to 50% CPU only when there is movement on a screen (video or mouse mainly).
i have tried two screens, and 1 screen as well as set the laptop screen as primary with no difference, these processes use a tone of CPU as long as the dock is connected. if i disconnect the dock completely kWin drops to 1% or less CPU usage and of course displaylink is no longer needed at that point.
I have also tried Cinnamon desktop over KDE Plasma and at least there i only have to deal with DisplayLink using ton of CPU...

output of DL Linux Support Tool is attached

after more testing and trying different desktop environments , LXDE is same as KDE as its using x11. GNOME Wayland seems to be pretty good, DisplayLink onliy hits 15% CPU, standard GNOME without Wayland it hits nearly 60% at times.

problem is, i dont care for GNOME and with Wayland my mouse cursor seems to stutter or get stuck quite a bit...

I have the same problem!
The problem is really annoying and the system load so high that it is hardly usable, please fix this! :(:(

- Lenovo ThinkPad T480s
- Intel i915 chipset
- Ubuntu 18.04.3 LTS
- Kernel 5.0.0-31-generic
- Displaylink driver 5.2

I think that this is causing issues in Gnome under X on Ubuntu 19.10 as I'm getting occasional hangs and am getting kicked out of Gnome, followed by X freezing, an inability to get to the consoles and the only resolution is pressing the power button to start the shutdown process or REISUB.

The CPU usage under X is 200%. Unfortunately I can't use Gnome under Wayland either as it crashes (when trying to edit the screen layout) so that's not a workaround for me.

I too have this problem with 19.10 and drivers 5.2.
This issue makes docking stations unusable with Ubuntu and my latest XPS 13. I tried different dock models and found myself stuck each time with this high CPU problem,
With Wayland I get a crash as soon as I change any display setting, otherwise it works but slowly because of the ridiculous CPU load.

Same here with Lenovo ThinkPad L580 and ThinkPad USB-C dockingstation.

Ubuntu 19.10
Displaylink Version 5.2
Displaylinkmanager 210% CPU load

Yes this is my experience, that Wayland crashes if you try to change anything in the display settings. It's slow and laggy in X too and every so often X will crash requiring the previously noted interventions.

The issue where changing display settings causes the Wayland session to hang has been seen on Fedora too: https://github.com/displaylink-rpm/displaylink-rpm/issues/112

is there any workaround for this problem?

Im running on Ubuntu 19.04
with the Dell D6000 Docking Station

As i use it with a Laptop the high CPU-load makes the laptop unusable because it gets very loud....
please some help... my colleagues in the company running windows 10 have no problems at all with those docks and the same laptops... and now im the stupid linux-guy with the crappy drivers?

I think this is such a massive bug, that the linux-drivers are defacto useless...

i have
- keyboard
- mouse
- 1 monitor with dvi
- network-cable

all connected to the d6000 station

as soon as i move the mouse a bit and do some window-work, the cpu-load goes through the roof.
And this is even true, when i connect the mouse to a normal usb-port directly on the laptop.
With the mouse on the normal usb connected, if i move the mouse, the display link cpu-load goes through the roof,
even if the mouse is not connected to it (as seen with linux top-command)

I also have this issue.
Xubuntu 18.04
Kernel Version: 5.3.0-26-generic
DisplayLink Version: 5.2.14
I use an NVIDIA GT 650M with nouveau

Processor load of DisplayLinkManager process (with one 2560x1440 60Hz monitor connected) reaches 14% to 40%, when moving mouse it reaches around 200% in sum. Load is similarly disastrous when watching videos. I used htop to look at load. I have 2 cores and 4 threads so this impacts cpu performance immensely!

Is this supposed to be normal behavior or can we expect a fix?

Hello,

I also have huge CPU usage making the laptop unusable -- when stuff moves on the screen.

My setup:
- Dell XPS 13
- linux
- gnome
- X
- latest displaylink software
- i-tec USB 3.0 / USB-C Dual 4K Dock

Is there anybody from DisplayLink who could eventually give some hint on this issue that seems to annoy several users ?

I will have to sell my docking station if no solution are provided :-(
