18.04 stuck on 640x480

Hello, I have 2x 1920x1080 monitors attached to a SIIG docking station

Under 16.04, they worked great with ubuntu GNOME.

I just installed Ubuntu 18.04 and the monitors are stuck in 640x480 mode. It's a System76 linux laptop (Kudu)

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Device 591b (rev 04)

I tried these suggestions, but didn't get anywhere:

I also tried adding the modes directly with xrandr in a .xprofile, but didn't get anywhere with that either. xrandr thought they were in 1920x1080, but the monitors still showed 640x480.

Has anyone gotten this to work?

Hello,

I also had only issues with Ubuntu in Gnome. Whenever I had the docking station connected I could not even login. Xorg would right away crash and push me back to the login screen.
So I tired Kubuntu and it worked, even thought the mouse flickering is worse.

Ubuntu 18.04 LTS includes X and Gnome now, so I'm sure DisplayLink intends to support it, instead of Kubuntu. Logging in works fine, and there's no mouse flickering.

Why are the monitors only showing 640x480 in "Displays" and xrandr?

I just upgraded from Ubuntu 14.04 to 18.04 and am also awaiting DisplayLink 18.04 support.

xrandr --newmode "1920x1080_60.00" 172.80 1920 2040 2248 2576 1080 1081 1084 1118 -HSync +Vsync
xrandr --addmode DVI-I-1-1 "1920x1080_60.00"
xrandr --output DVI-I-1-1 --mode "1920x1080_60.00"


Use the output from gtf (after Modeline) in xrandr --newmode
Replace DVI-I-1-1 with your xrandr DisplayLink output.

Hi Sparxy, hmmm... that didn't work.

It creates a new mode, shows the resolution in the Display settings, and appears to create a 1920x1080 buffer in Gnome.

But the DisplayLink is still showing a clipped 640x480 display of the center of that larger buffer. The monitor is still 640x480.

The hardware has ports for HDMI and Displayport cables for each of 2 monitors.

The workaround was to replace the DisplayPort cables with HDMI cables.

The odds of 2 cables/ports going bad at the same time is astronomical, so it seems a bug in the driver or firmware.

I'm not at all happy with the support I got on this product and would not recommend DisplayLink products to anyone.

I would like to rule out some potential misunderstandings that might have risen and hopefully gather more information on the topic.
First: do you use GNOME with Xorg or Wayland?

Second: could you confirm that the monitors are fully operational (i.e. running native resolution, correct refresh rate etc.) when connected over DP directly to another machine (without a dock).

Last but not least:
what are the monitors you use with the dock?

My Hardware
Laptop with Intel® HD Graphics 530 (Skylake GT2)
USB3 Dock: Club 3D CSV-1460, Chipset: DL-6950, 2 Displayports

Fresh Ubuntu 18.04 installation.
Well-known, at Time Wayland does not work together with Displaylink.
XOrg does (Gnome 3.28.2).

For the Installation of the Displaylink driver i used this Script:

If i connect a Monitor direct via Displayport Cable, the Monitor will only show a resolution of 640x480.
The manual xrandr solution will only generate a big Buffer around the 640x480 resolution of the Monitor.

The Solution is a simple Displayport to DVI Adapter.

For lack of a DVI Port at the Displayport Monitor i used a different Monitor for this Test.
Since i have only one Adapter, i can only test with one Monitor.

Display Rotation is also working.
Plug and Play is working as expected.
A Reboot is working as expected.

It seems to be a very specific Displayport Problem.
