View Full Version : [Solved] New MacOS Catalina breaks DisplayLink

pacmanbneNL

I have installed the New Catalina MacOS however it appears to break the current release of DisplayLink

This is more of an FYI for others rather than a cry for help I can live without it until DisplayLink provide an update

Update:
When I say broken I mean I can see the mouse pointer but both external monitors are plank only my laptop screen is visible. Both network and mouse and keyboard all work without issue.

Update2:

I think I have fixed my problem under System Preferences / Security & Privacy / Screen Recording put a tick in the DisplayLinkUserAgent.app

This seem to solve my problem

I don't have the DisplayLinkUserAgent in the ScreenRecording tab.

Shinji14

In terminal :

cd /Library/PrivilegedHelperTools/DisplayLink/DisplayLinkUserAgent.app/Contents/MacOS
./DisplayLinkUserAgent

This will popup a message that Terminal wants to screenrecord.

Driver tested : 5.1.1

I tried the suggestion, but it didn't work for me. I also onl . installed the display link driver after I upgraded. We moved offices yesterday and we are using display link docks. Anything that might make it work?

For me broken means the monitors don't recognize the MacBook Pro at all; they just go to sleep. I don't have a Screen Recorder option in Settings to enable.

So right now I'm just looking at 2 dead monitors next to my Laptop until a new driver is released that supports Catalina.

I would suggest you look under every option in the Privacy tab under "Security & Privacy" in System Preferences look for DisplayLinkUserAgent.app it appears in two places for me Screen Recording and Accessibility

Also if this was the first time you installed the driver you will need to click allow under the General Tab Its been a while since I read the install notes on the readme but I think that requirement is detailed there

Fixed it.

My issue is I wasn't running v5.1.1. Once I installed the latest version, and enabled Screen Recording, both of my external monitors worked.

Dude that saved me hours of investigation. Worked perfectly (after reboot)

Thanks!!!

I don't know if this is monitor specific, but with Mojave I had my two external monitors set to 60 Hertz and all was good but with the Catalina install, the refresh on the external monitor was lagging severely. Changing the refresh rate to 59.88 Hertz (NTSC) fixed this for me.

This worked.

Stupid question, but now the display link user agent is now allowed to record our screen? Is this a privacy issue?

Hi raym,

The new permission is required to be able to use an interface of the O/S that allows the driver to get pixels that are supposed to be displayed on screens connected to DisplayLink devices.

Similarly, on Catalina, you probably noticed you are now being asked to grant permissions for various apps trying to access files in various locations on your disk that are potentially sensitive. (DisplayLink driver does not need any of that in order to work)

Both examples are part of the improved security mechanisms Catalina brings - giving more control to users.

Kind regards,
Michal

I got both my monitors working when I boot up but as soon as I undock my macbook and then plug it back in neither external monitor will reconnect, even if I log out and back in it doesn't work. Has to be a full reboot. Any ideas? I have the boxes ticked in both Accessibility and Screen Recording.

I know the subject says Solved, but it's not.

Running a 2018 MBP 15", Catalina 10.15, connecting via USB C. Got an ASUS ZenScreen, installed drivers 5.2 from DisplayLink. Install went fine, I approved the kext, and allowed the screen recording DisplayLinkUserAgent. Rebooted. Doesn't work. The display gives the error: "DisplayPort NO SIGNAL". When connected, the mouse cursor using the touchpad "sticks" every second and then catches up. Tried uninstalling, rebooting, re-installing - 3 times. Same exact thing. So it's definitely still broken. Anyone know when a fix will be coming or any other workaround?

(The only workaround I've found is to use a USB-C to USB-A adapter on the MBP t o convert the USB-C to A - that works... it's obviously not DisplayPort over USB-C anymore, but it does work. But using an adapter is a bad solution when it should just be fixed in software to make USB-C work.)

For me this is also NOT solved. I checked the appropriate boxes in the security settings but the third screen stays black. It is shown in System Preferences -> Monitors, but thats all, nothing is visible on the screen.
I have tried installing the older driver again, uninstalling and installing 5.2.1, nothing seems to helps.

MacBook Air (Beginning of 2015, 2.2GHz i7)

Now, again, after the desaster with MacOS 10.13, I am left with a missing screen in my working environment...

I've reinstalled the driver + Checked screen recording box + Reboot several times without succes. The displays show up in preferences, but they remain black. First install cursor was visible, now nothing.

Please fix this.

MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2017) with Dell U2717D external monitor.

After the upgrade, I simply missed the checkbox in System Preferences / Security & Privacy / Screen Recording. Made the mistake of installing the beta 2 driver, which did not work. Downgrading back to 5.1.1 and making sure the box was checked and bingo, I have my external monitor back.

After Catalina and DisplayLink 5.1.2 beta software (as suggested), my screens still did not work (MBP screen flashes when plugging in the dock, other screens remain in sleep mode). Permissions to record screen were given and I tried installing/re-installing multiple times.

Downgrading from 5.1.2 beta to 5.1.1 (which works fine with Catalina for now) solved it for me.

I originally thought that 5.1.2 did not work because the kernel was not loaded (Loadable: Yes, Loaded: No), but it's working with 5.1.1 and it still says not loaded (see below). Hope the devs can provide smoother solutions with the next upgrades.

It seems that the DisplayLink extension it doesn't load (Loaded: No). So i found a solution to start it using the Bundle ID:

sudo kextload -b com.displaylink.driver.DisplayLinkDriver

For me it works. I'm also using last beta version of DisplayLink driver.

When executing this command I'm getting the following message:

com.displaylink.driver.DisplayLinkDriver failed to load - (libkern/kext) different version/uuid already loaded; check the system/kernel logs for errors or try kextutil(8).

The display link extension is not loaded. I have installed the latest beta 2 version multiple times. However I'm not getting the System Extension Blocked message as suggested in the knowledge base (https://support.displaylink.com/knowledgebase/articles/1188004-macos-10-13-10-14-and-10-15-video-functionality).

Any suggestions?

Hi, silverscreen

We experience macOS kernel cache issues. Most likely old incompatible kernel extension is still loaded.
Can you help us to verify our suspicion?

Please do following experiment:
- Uninstall DisplayLink software
- Reboot
- What is the output of command(empty output means it is OK):
kextstat | grep DisplayLink

Give us an update, and follow that article if "kextstat | grep DisplayLink" returns non empty output.
2. Please follow steps from that article:

You need to follow the article:

tl.dr
1. Uninstall DisplayLink driver first

Based on the title I thought this KB article was not relevant, but it fixed the first problem. The extension is now loaded and I have a mirror of my main monitor.

How to switch this from a mirror to a extended screen (as I had before)? Reconnecting the USB doesn't fix the issue. The Airplay icon is not visible and the only option for AirPlay Display is Off.

You can easily switch to extend mode in "System Preferences->Displays->Arrangement" where you have to untick "Mirror Displays" option.

https://www.displaylink.com/downloads/file?id=1433

You can easily switch to extend mode in "System Preferences->Displays->Arrangement" where you have to untick "Mirror Displays" option.

I did a couple of uninstall / installs with 5.2.1 beta 2. Mirror displays is unchecked. AirPlay Display says only off in the select list. I see the Air Play icon and that also says off.

I see the two displays extended (directly connected) and the third (DisplayLink) as mirror. No option to extend the DisplayLink monitor.

I have the following setup: 1-2-3. Where 1 is the display link and 2 and 3 are connected to the Mac Mini. Playing around on the arrangement tab:

When the menubar is on 1, then all displays are extended.
When the menubar is on 2, then 1 is a mirror of 2.
When the menubar is on 3, then 1 is a mirror of 3.

I also noticed that I can move my mouse cursor around on the mirrored screen, like it's a actual extended display, but I cannot click on anything! I want the menubar on 2 because this one is directly on front of me.

Any idea?

Tried to do it this way, but terminal command is not available in recovery mode on my mac which runs catalina.

After the unsuccessful messing with the recovery mode, decided to delete again the software and download again and reinstall, this will be like the 5 time reinstalling last version, and for some reason it works, finally. Nothing I have tried worked, but uninstalling and installing the software did the trick I guess, and that is the latest version available for display link.

I attached an image.

Upgraded to catalina this morning. At first neither of my monitors were working. I followed the steps on the KB articles that have been linked and got it working... well kinda of. My second monitor (which is connected via displayport to my dock) is having some major issues with with distortion, as the picture shows.

Works fine on my windows PC.

I would be grateful for output of terminal command:
sudo kextstat | grep DisplayLink

The second link fixed this for me. Thank you!

I was able to fix the issue this morning.

Steps that I took:

Uninstalled the displaylink driver.
Shutdown my mac and entered recovery mode.
Opened up the terminal and ran:

kextcache -i /Volumes/Local

Note: Local is the name of my disk. Yours may vary.
The command returned a string/id/guid (not sure what it entails), but there was no error message.

reboot

After it booted back up, I opened up terminal again.

kextcache | grep DisplayLink

The grep returned nothing, which now I knew the driver was gone completely. Grep is a regular expression search, meaning it returning nothing is what we want here as we cleared the cache.

I installed the beta driver and it rebooted.

Afterward, success!

I tried above solution, after it booted back up, I opened up terminal again. I type kextcache | grep DisplayLink and that's what I get, idk if this is good or not (or should I type that code in recovery mode?). I attached my output logs.

EDIT: Added screenshot of kextstat | grep DisplayLink. It returned nothing so the driver was gone?

EDIT2: Added screenshot of kextstat | grep DisplayLink in recovery mode because I don't knot where I should type this. It retuned command not found.

this solution got output to my 2 DisplayLink driven external monitors, but required some extra work in the system preferences.
reboot broke it all again

Steps:
1. uninstalled DisplayLink driver
2. rebooted and checked the kextcache to verify it was cleared and verified DisplayLink software no longer installed
3. reinstalled DisplayLink driver v5.2(15)
4. rebooted

Results: 2 external DisplayLink monitors are recognized by the OS (cursor displays on each) but only shows black screen. app windows moved to the monitors do not display, nor does the desktop background image

5. Opened System/Preferences/Displays
Selected: Arrangement Mirror Displays
all external monitors display everything perfectly
deselecting 'mirror...' and the DL monitors go back to black, but clicking on each monitor in the arrangement display shows the thin red line indicating another monitor adjacent to the main display
Selected each of the external monitors in turn and selected "Optimize for display"
Unselected 'Mirror Displays" and all are working as expected

6. Rebooting computer - external DisplayLink monitors return to black w/ cursor state.

any other thoughts or suggestions welcome ... I'll try anything at this point. this is my work computer.

Thanks, All!

Yes I did, I re-did the command so you could see. I also entered the kextstat | grep DisplayLink command and it gave the output in the screenshot. Please see the attached screenshot in recovery mode for both commands.

Hi swigs,
I have found other solution, however I am not sure how reliable it is.
Instructions are:
1. Uninstall displaylink driver.
2. Enter macOS Recovery mode
3. In terminal enter command:
csrutil disable
4. Boot to normal macOS and enter command in terminal:
sudo touch /Library/Extensions
and reboot
5. Boot to normal macOS. At this stage kextstat | grep DisplayLink should be empty
6. Enter command in terminal
sudo csrutil clear
This will enable system integrity protection disabled in step 2.

Macbook Air 2018, DisplayLink v 5.2 installed prior to upgrade to Catalina w. ThinkPad dock where Screen Recording has been allowed and working as expected after boot.

Issue: After sleep or disconnect from dock displays wither show black background w. mouse or screen(s) not waking.

Solution (Certified "works on my machine")
1) Disconnect dock
2) Start Activity Monitor, kill DisplayLinkUserAgent and DisplayLinkManager
3) Reconnect dock

Please install beta 5.2.1 driver
https://www.displaylink.com/downloads/file?id=1433

Per suggestion:
installed 5.2.1 Beta
RESULTS: 2 external monitors driven by DisplayLink software are no longer configurable in Display preferences, they do not show up at all, therefore unable to perform the work around steps previously listed to get output to those monitors.

System Report/Hardware/USB shows the 2 USB Display Adapters, I can't recall exactly but I think this reference used to indicate the make and model of the monitors. that info no longer part of the report.

Processes Status (Activity Monitor/CPU/info)
DisplayLinkManager and DisplayLinkUserAgent both showing large number of faults: 6,291 and 12,583 respectively.

I tried absolutely everything to solve this issue but nothing seemed to work. I didn't have the privacy setting so I couldn't do anything there. I booted into recovery and ran all the commands and pretty much every suggestion in this thread, still nothing worked.

Let's start with my experience. On initial boot, both monitors worked great. As soon as I let the monitors go to sleep, only one would recover from sleep. I finally decided as a workaround I would just set the monitors to never sleep and I would try a few other options. First, I just physically turned off the monitors. I turned them back on and everything still worked. Great. Next I tried putting the mac itself to sleep. It went to sleep and woke fine and both monitors still worked. Next I set up a hot corner to put the monitors to sleep. That also worked. OK, strange, but whatever. Next I set my monitors to sleep at 1 minute, and that tested fine as well. I finally set it back to 3 minutes which is where I originally had it and I haven't had a problem since.

I'm not sure if my experience is similar to others. For instance, when one of my monitors didn't recover from sleep, it simply wasn't listed under displays... but after reboot it was. I've seen others say theirs was still listed, so that seems to be a difference.

TL;DR - I set my my monitor to never sleep and back and that seems to have cured my woes.

Oh, and I'm running 5.2.1 beta 2.

Problems here as well. I just updated to Catalina my Mac Mini (late 2012), installed the new beta drivers and provided the required screen recording authorisation. The DisplayLink screen is correctly recognised by the OS and seems to be active (windows can be moved to there), although it is completely blank (not even the mouse pointer can be seen).

So I went through all the steps above, and kextstat | grep DisplayLink was indeed empty after that. However, when I went back into recovery mode after completing all the above steps to input the kextcache -I /Volumes/MyDisk command, I got a similar output as before as seen in the attached screenshot. And for whatever reason it was no longer recognizing the kextstat | grep DisplayLink command now too..

That is fine, you after exit from recovery mode, you can install DisplayLink 5.2.1beta driver.

I had an issue where after updating to Catalina (dumb idea on first release :D) my monitor on a displaylink-powered dongle was blurry and had a weirdish res being stretched to 1920x1200. (Probably rendering at 1920x1080 and stretching).

Updated to the beta driver. Screen black. Nothing to do but just unplug it.

Today's Catalina update got applied and now the screen works perfectly again - maybe the update process rebuilds something /shrug.

But worth a go for anyone suffering Black Screen Blues.

Hi Swigs, all

In the attachment I had put dl_cache_fix_wizard.command script, that is guiding you in order to fix the problem. Since we need one manual step(going to recovery mode) it can't be fully automatic.

If all will be fine you will be prompted to install displaylink driver with such message:
"System cache integrity is correct. Please install DisplayLink driver ..."

Since the update to Catalina last night, my new MacBook can see my Displaylink monitor, but it is always just a mirror of one of my other directly connected monitors. I have tried everything suggested in this forum with no luck.

I did just figure a work-around of sorts. If the Displaylink monitor is set as the primary monitor (the one with the desktop links), then it no longer mirrors another monitor. Not ideal in my setup, but I can live with it.

In case the script is blocked by Gatekeeper (you should see a popup message saying "“dl_cache_fix_wizard.command” can’t be opened because it is from an unidentified developer."),
please open System Preferences->Security &Privacy->General tab and click on "Open anyway" button.

My monitors stopped working on my macbook air when I upgraded to Catalina. I followed the instructions here:

https://support.displaylink.com/knowledgebase/articles/1925041-macos-catalina-10-15-black-screen-or-only-one-mon

One last step that needed to be done after the above instructions was to go to Security and Privacy in System Preferences. In the General tab at the bottom is a new message I hadn't seen before that read "Some system software was blocked from loading" with an "Allow" button. I clicked that button and saw DisplayLink in the list. I checked the box for it and restarted and my monitors work now.

I've been trying to get my dual monitor setup to work with my 2018 MacBook Pro and the startech dock since installing Catalina. I've done the uninstall -> boot to recovery -> re-install process a couple times, most recently a few hours ago with Beta 3 of the software.

I've attached the DisplayLink info output. I'd really appreciate any help with this.

Hi, I have the same issue as rarutu.
Right after apple Catalina Update (10.15.1) Display link stop working.
After Installing Catalina and before the last update the dual monitor and everything were working.
Beside the fact that i couldn't charge my MAC from DisplayLink anymore.
However after the 15.1 update nothing works anymore. Only mouse and Keyboard.
If i connect and disconnect the DisplayLink USB type C cable from my laptop and reconnect it My laptop monitor start to flicker like trying to connect to the external monitors. But the external monitors does not turn on.
In attachment there is my log.
It would be great if you could help pr release an update as i can use only the laptop monitor now which is very counter-productive.

Thank you!

So I am not Cyfer, but I was struggling this morning to get it working with the same issue they had. Then I tested plugging in the dock, and then plugging in a separate power cord and poof my displays started working again. I have gone through so many different versions of the driver and am currently on 5.1.1 though not sure it matters which one as 5.2 worked yesterday right after the update to Catalina then stopped working today. Not sure what is going on.

The Charging is not an issue, even before 15.1 i was using an external charger for that. But at least i was able to use the monitors, keyboard and mouse with displaylink.
But now after 15.1 nothing works even if i have the charger connected and connect the Displaylink.
It is clearly a software issue since a Catalina Update broke it.

Hi All,
I just given up on this and i solve the problem buying another dockstation which has no problem with MAC Catalina

My problem is that I can't find the DisplayLinkUserAgent.app anywhere. It's not under any heading in privacy at all.

There are a lot of right answers in this thread but one that is seemingly missing is to update your docks firmware. This requires a windows computer (don't try with a VM).

I don't have the DisplayLinkUserAgent in the ScreenRecording tab.

Neither do I, and I've re-installed Cataline 2x now, and DisplayLink 5.3 three times, but the DisplayLink UserAgent box never appears in Screen Respond box. I manually put it into Accessibility, but no luck getting my monitors recognized: they don't even appear on the "Display" in System Preferences.

Puzzled.

We have identified that part of Dell D6000 docks produced between mid 2018-mid 2019 contains USB Hub firmware issue that was uncovered by macOS Catalina 10.15.1 release.

There is a for that.

Please update your dock hub using "Dell Firmware Update Utility":
https://www.dell.com/support/home/pl/pl/plbsd1/product-support/product/dell-universal-dock-d6000/drivers

@davidwiens
If hub firmware does not help then please submit your logs using that tool:

Submit the logs to who? email?

I am running the latest 5.2 driver, Catalina 10.15.1 and I get the same as many others. Nothing shows up in my Screen Preferences and my screen is black.

My kext is showing loaded properly and notorized. I disabled SIP and touched /Library/Extensions as well. I don't get any popup about allowing access for Screen Recording and it doesn't show any apps listed for Screen Recording in my System Preferences->Security->Privacy.

I am willing to try anything at this poing.

I have had exactly the same experience. I'll try the 5.1.1 solution and see how that goes.

Update: 5.1.1 gets both external displays working again (yay!), but I should note that the dock doesn't work on one, although that limitation I can live with.

Update 2: The 5.2.1 version announced on 23rd Nov is installed and working, so far with no issues. :)

Hi Signal,

It seems that you don't have DisplayLink docking station connected.
It is visible in "About This Mac"->System Report->Hardware->USB tree.

Can you check the usb cable or power cable?
How the dock behaves on Windows?
Are other devices like mouse connected to the dock working?

I have an iMac and its plugged into my Zenscreen via USB-C. It powers up the Zenscreen but its just blank.

Okay, so I finally got DisplayLink 5.2.1 working with Catalina 10.15.2, after following all the directions and performing a bunch of installs/uninstalls (none of which worked...lol).

I have a Mac Mini (late 2012) and I was running High Sierra. I figured there would be some issues updating DisplayPort, after updating to Catalina (DisplayLink has historically, never been an easy install...that's why I always perform a backup before mucking up my machine). I have a 15" AOC monitor which has been getting its power from the USB ports on my Mac Mini.

Anyway, after updating to Catalina, I installed DisplayLink 5.2.1, allowed permission for the install, made sure that DisplayLink was enabled in the "Accessibility" control panel, made sure that it was enabled in "Screen Sharing", and made sure the extension was loaded in "About this Mac" | System Report | Software | Extensions.

After doing that several times (with no luck), I figured I'd try putting a powered USB 3.0 hub between the monitor and my Mac. That did the trick.

It seems that, perhaps, either Mac OS X Catalina or DisplayLink no longer consider the two onboard Mac USB ports sufficient enough to power the monitor.

That may or may not be your issue, but it's worth a shot (I believe newer MacBooks have USB-C and that specification is supposed to, theoretically, provide adequate power). The main downside is that you wouldn't be able to be free from being near an AC outlet.

Like most of the other users on this thread, I have tried just about everything and I am about to give up, get rid of my 2017 13" MacBook Pro and say f*ck it all, but I want to give it one last shot. Here's what I am working with:

I have a 2017 MacBook Pro. Here are the stats:

Hardware Overview:

Model Name: MacBook Pro
Model Identifier: MacBookPro14,2
Processor Name: Dual-Core Intel Core i5
Processor Speed: 3.1 GHz
Number of Processors: 1
Total Number of Cores: 2
L2 Cache (per Core): 256 KB
L3 Cache: 4 MB
Hyper-Threading Technology: Enabled
Memory: 8 GB
Boot ROM Version: 203.0.0.0.0
SMC Version (system): 2.44f2
Serial Number (system): C02V911WHV2M
Hardware UUID: FA084142-8932-5A1B-A71D-473987213A5F

I was running the MacBook on a separate stand with the screen closed connected to two LG 4K Ultra monitors connected via USB-C - HDMI inputs on the monitors. Running both Mojave or High Sierra, no problems at all. Both monitors ran at high resolution, docking/undocking no problems at all. As soon as I updated to Catalina, the wheels fell off - I could only get one monitor at a time to work and it defaulted to the MacBook display resolution. I tried connecting both USB-C cables, one at a time, switching them out - same thing - only one display will work, never both. I have been uninstalling, and installing the DisplayLink USB graphics software since it October and installed the latest update with the same result.

I also followed the instructions for activating Screen Recording. It's odd, but I have no options under Screen Recording in System Preferences:

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1jeCPA9zxwIWAW4yqTEpILteMHfAoUdWG/view?usp=sharing

I have also tried using USB-C - HDMI and USB-C - DisplayPort cables with the same result. I also followed Apple's SMC reset instructions without success.

I used to work as a software engineer and think my QA skills are pretty solid but this one has really got me. Would love to hear any suggestions on why this is not working and what changed since Mojave and High Sierra

I recently upgraded to Catalina even though I had issues in the past OS updates of breaking the docking station with High Sierra.
I tried several of the recent versions of the DisplayLink driver. Nothing I could do would get it to prompt me to add the useragent to Screen Recording privilege with my primary account.
Finally I decided to install the software and then login as a different, local user... and do the rest of the setup that way... this time it prompted me as it should and now I am typing this from one of my external displays!
So... try installing it clean and then login as a new user and plug in the dock and the prompts should come up.
Hallelujah!
Hope it helps someone...

I placed an unpowered VAVA USB-C Hub between my D6000 and my MBP 2019 (10.15.2) and the displays came right up.

Connection looks like this:

Dual 4K Dell monitors (and various USB peripherals) -> D6000 -> (using USB-C to A converter) MBP (running DisplayLink 5.2.1).

Hello, I followed all the latest instructions but the DisplayLink option doesn't show up in the Privacy settings and I can't find a way to add it manually.

How did you do?

I ended up connecting my MacBook to power directly and then then Hub to another USB port - that worked for me ...

Screen Recording optons was not available.

Spent 12 hours and got result. Catalina 10.15.3. Vantec USB3->DP4K.
Both internal and usb displays works.
Latest steps:
uninstalled "kext drivers" version (5.2.1(59))
in hackingtool - restore permissions and clear cache.
installed "app drivers" version (alpha 0.2.42)
SIP: enable
kext-dev-mode option removed from boot flags.
checked UsbCurrent - removed anything from USB except displaylink, keyboard and mouse, checked cables.
