laptop monitor still active when closed

After updating to 10.15, my dual external monitors work just fine. The problem I have is with the laptop monitor. When I close the laptop, the laptop monitor apears to be still active. When I launch applications, they open on the laptop monitor and then I have to open it to move them to the external displays. Has anyone else had this problem?

I have the same issue on 10.14.6. Mac OS seems to think the internal display is still active even though the lid is closed and the screen is blank. Using DisplayLink USB Graphics Software for macOS 5.2.5
