Hello, I just purchased a StarTech.com USB 3.0 to Dual DisplayPort Adapter 4K (https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B07C69HG33). It works with my 1080p display but crashes the windowserver in an infinite loop with my Acer B286HK 4K display. I have tried various cables (DisplayPort, Mini DP, DP to HDMI) with the same result.

Did you happen to do put one of your displays in portrait mode? Portrait mode not supported on M1 Macs, version 1.2.

Yes, actually! I was indeed trying to use the 4K display in portrait mode.

Is there any way to reset this? I can't plug the monitor in without DisplayLink crashing, which means I can't open the System Preference.

There are sister threads here and support documents for removing a corrupt install. I would start with looking them over.... You can prevent most issues temporarily by Starting up computer after shut down with Shift key held down which will put you in Safe boot, you have to hold it for a long time and you will eventually see safe boot, in red in top right hand corner of login screen.

Thanks, I appreciate the help.

I've uninstalled DisplayLink using the installer and removed all related files I could find in ~/Library. I also connected the 4K monitor independently and set its rotation back to normal. However, the login session still crashes and returns me to the macOS login screen. I've tried restarting in Safe Mode as well.

Ah, the solution to delete the windowserver plist files in this post worked for me. I'm looking forward to rotation support, however!
