I have a 13" MacBook Pro (2020, Apple M1) connected to an LG 5K display using Thunderbolt and to a Dell 1920 x 1200 monitor using a StarTech USB 3.0 to Dual Displayport adapter (DisplayLink certified).

I'm running the latest version of Big Sur 11.2.2 and DisplayLink driver version 1.3.

The Apple Music app is on the Dell display. I'm an Apple Music subscriber and I frequently see the following error when playing music:

The selected movie won’t play on one of your connected displays

This will happen a few seconds into a track, however after I dismiss the error and hit play again it will often work OK.

I know that lack of HDCP prevents some content-protected movies from playing when a DisplayLink monitor is connected. I didn't expect it to happen with music. Is this expected behaviour, or a bug? I'm not clear if this is an issue in the Apple Music app or if it's in the DisplayLink driver. I didn't notice this behaviour with version 1.2 of the driver.

I turned off lossless audio and the issue has presented itself a lot less since.

I turned off lossless audio and the issue has presented itself a lot less since.

I have it turned off, and basically ever song or every second song pauses with the error. But resumes if I play it again.
