Can't install displaylink-driver on Ubuntu 22.04

Previously installed the displaylink driver using these steps - using a .run file

Had no joy getting a DOCK180 box working

Now installed the display link drivers using these steps - using 'apt install'

The attached file shows the results of running 'sudo apt install displaylink-driver'. It says the driver is installed but fails when setting up evdi. Got the recent evdi and displaylink-driver package updates. This doesn't fix the issue.

Can connect a DOCK180 docking station but can't connect to another screen using HDMI. And can access a USB drive plugged into DOCK180. Know the DOCK180 box works as it works on another Ubuntu box - both USB drives and 2 screens work connected to the DOCK180.

How do you delete the previous install so that the new install method works? Hope you can help.

removed the packages install prior to using the .run file: dkms libdrm-dev flex
ran sudo apt remove displaylink-driver but it has already been removed

ran sudo apt install displaylink-driver. It downloaded and unpacked all the packages. See install.txt. In this file was an error at the make command:
ERROR: Cannot create report: [Errno 17] File exists: '/var/crash/evdi.0.crash'
Error! Bad return status for module build on kernel: 5.15.0-79-generic (x86_64)
Consult /var/lib/dkms/evdi/1.14.1/build/make.log for more information.

The make.log file is also attached. Renamed to make.log.txt so it could be uploaded. make.log says autoconf.h or auto.conf are missing followed by "Run 'make oldconfig && make prepare' on kernel src to fix it."

My USB to DVI adapter was working just fine until about 2 weeks ago when I had to take my laptop with me on a trip. When I got back I hooked it up only to find my extra display connected through DisplayLink is now blank with no signal.

Just like peterau I have tried to follow the less than helpful (for a non geek) instructions at

to no avail. See the attached text file which contains a copy from my latest effort using the command line.

Toshiba SATELLITE L755
Ubuntu 22.04.3 LTS x86_64
Kernel: 6.2.0-26-generic

If I boot into Windoze 7 everything works just fine so the hardware is okay.

I have spent two whole days on this... Please help.

That's a really good point. Where is the uninstall script or procedure referred to at step 8? "For uninstallation procedure see here." and there is no here.

The .run install file is 107k lines long. Going to need some help to fix this issue.

If 2 people have posted about the same issue I'm sure there are many people in the same boat.

Apparently not!!!

So... I just bought a 32" monitor and mounted it in "Portrait" mode, replacing two 24" monitors stacked one above the other, which I had been using as a single screen... (I HATE scrolling!!!)... Now, while I have less screen width, I don't have the display border in the middle anymore. I may even get to like this setup better?

In which case Display Link can go pro-create with themselves!

When and a big IF DL decides to help us, I will use one of the 24"s for "Fullscreen" mode videos (not great on a "Portrait" mode display).

Sorry, I don't understand. How does this help us fix the issue? At the top of this thread see "Can't install displaylink-driver on Ubuntu 22.04"

The only change I can see is step 8 on this page (https://support.displaylink.com/knowledgebase/articles/615714#ubuntu) has been removed - a reference to an uninstall script.

Followed the step 8 instruction. Ran "sudo displaylink-installer uninstall". The response was "command not found"
Tried "sudo apt install displaylink-installer". The response was "Unable to locate package displaylink-installer".
Still have the same as detailed at the top of this thread - can't install the displaylink-driver. Can't use the docking station. What's the next step to resolve this issue?

I am posting a copy of my Terminal readout in case it helps with the resolution to the above issue.

With my new monitor setup I don't really give a Schiff if DL ever figures this out. It is nice to know that they do visit the Linux part of this forum. As the rest of the world slowly wakes up and ditches Microsoft, Apple and Google we should see better support for open source. It is just a matter of time, so I won't "float test" my adapter just yet.

- Deleting from: /lib/modules/6.2.0-26-generic/updates/dkms/
- Original module
- No original module was found for this module on this kernel.
- Use the dkms install command to reinstall any previous module version.

depmod.............
Deleting module evdi-1.14.1 completely from the DKMS tree.
rm -f -rf /usr/src/evdi-1.14.1
make: Leaving directory '/tmp/tmp.1JqDnVdBXL/module'
Stopping displaylink-driver systemd service
[ Removing suspend-resume hooks ]
[ Removing udev rule ]
[ Removing Core folder ]

Uninstallation steps complete.
Please note that the evdi kernel module is still in the memory.
A reboot is required to fully complete the uninstallation process.

I found following installer wrapper which checks all the related dependencys, install them (after confirmation) and successfully installs the DisplayLink driver on UBUNTU 22.04.03 and also on UBUNTU 23.04 (both with kernel 6.2):
