It's practivally difficult to install an old nVidia driver. The best solution is DisplayLink fix the issue ASAP.

Downgrading the NVIDIA graphics driver to an earlier version should work, however they are pushing out the newer version on Windows update, so as soon as you downgrade, Windows 8 might be helpfully upgrading it again for you.

As I mentioned in a previous post, I did roll back my drivers and it didn't fix the issue (and I didn't mention that I also got hold of an even older driver that would install, but also didn't work). I also have my auto update switched off and windows didn't automatically update my driver. And as far as I have seen, there hasn't been one person that said rolling back their drivers worked (the only ones were random where people have claimed to do the same thing 5 or 6 times where suddenly it worked, but most people clearly can't replicate this)

Also I don't want to be one of those annoying whingers, but the only reason I haven't posted another reply until now was that I was getting annoyed with this whole situation, so I was waiting in the hope a solution would soon appear. It is clear that most people are having the exact same problem, so if it were my business and I was handling the problem I would at least put up a statement telling everyone that I was aware of the problem and that there unfortunately doesn't seem to be a quick fix, and then I would tell people we were working on a solution and give them a rough date by which we would have either a solution to the problem, or at least more information. Anyway, just saying that that is what I would do

+1 to everything you just said, with the exception of not whining.

I've been running three monitors for four years, utilizing all three every day I'm at my desk. Having my shiny new computer but not being able to use my monitors reduces my productivity tremendously. I'd be better off returning the computer and dock and stick with my 4yo sloooow computer, at least I'd have room to get some work done.

Whine complete (for now).

How to Rollback and stop Windows Update

It's only a temporary workaround, but we've posted a bit more detail on the Plugable site about how to roll back the nVidia driver to the working version, and stop Windows Update from updating that one driver in the future.

Here's some steps:

nVidia’s new October Win8 driver version for the GeForce GT 525M and related chips cause DisplayLink’s USB graphics driver to stop functioning. Rollback to nVidia driver version 9.18.13.286 (6/21/2012) solves the issue. If you get in this situation, here’s how to do a rollback (on Win 7; but same applies to 8):
http://pcsupport.about.com/od/window...-windows-7.htm

And then you have to stop Windows Update from offering the same update again. To do that, hit the Windows key (to bring up search), type “Windows Update”, expand the important updates, and right click on the one from nVidia and select “hide update”.

(more at http://plugable.com/2012/10/27/windows-8-displaylink )

We also have to wait for DisplayLink's driver updates, but if you're a Plugable customer and have any requests for us (like getting an email notification when issues are resolved; or if you're hitting any unique problems), just email us at support@plugable.com. We'll do whatever we can do help. Thanks for your patience!

Thanks for the more detailed information, it helps explain why the solution didn't work for me. My machine is new and the furthest rollback I could do was to 9.18.13.614 (28/08/2012) (if this info was put in those earlier posts I could have saved myself a hell of a lot of time and frustration).

If I download older drivers I am unable to install them (windows blocks it). I guess I could try to force the install, but I'm not sure that is worth risking losing my laptop display.

Hi All,
Unfortunately I also have a problem but mine seems a little different.
It shows me the Displaylink icon in the system tray with an exclamation mark inside. When I click on this, a error message is displayed saying my "USB graphics software is not compatible"

I'm using a EVGA UV Plus+16. Works fine on XP and Win7.

You need to install the latest driver for your graphics card. It's currently using the Microsoft inbox driver:

Graphics: Microsoft Basic Display Adapter ((Standard display types))
Graphics Driver: 6.2.9200.16384 Dated 2006/06/21

Still having issues

Well, I got my monitor to at least turn on, but now it is blank with a mouse pointer in the middle. I uninstalled the display link software, restarted, plugged the device in, and let Windows get the drivers themselves. This installed properly, restarted my computer, and now my monitor turns on but I just have a mouse pointer in the middle of it. My other HDMI monitor works just fine, but the USB-to-HDMI monitor doesn't work. This probably has to do with the newest Nvidia Driver, but I am just shooting you an update.

New driver...still no luck

1 Attachment(s)
Tried new driver 7.0M3. Cleaned out the old install, restarted, installed new driver, plugged in the graphics, drivers configured and the system was restarted. Upon restart the system logs on and logs off several times and ending with all three monitors turned on but with black screens except for the mousecursor (????) which can travel on all three monitors.

This is VERY unsatisfying to say the least and really not good enough!

Update: I managed to have the Windows session running long enough to run the support tool. I've attached the updated file.

Damn it. I think I can see the problem in the logs, and its already a bug being worked on at the moment, but we didn't have a fix in time for this release.

We have another release in a few weeks in December, which should pick up this fix.

Can you recover if you restart the DisplayLink service?

Wim

hba 11-23-2012 08:15 PM

Nope. I can't keep the Windows session alive long enough to restart the service.

Btw the DisplayLink trayicon never shows up, or it does so when the screen starts to flicker. I can't see.

Just downloaded 7.0M3 and luckily saw this post before I install it. So I will not install it. IMO the flickering screen is of top priority, if it is not fixed why a new release? What's new in M3 please?

The compatibility with NVIDIA should be fixed if this is your issue. The post above showed a different issue which was not addressed in time. I don't know what issue you have as you've not posted logs about your problem.

My issue is th screen keeps flicking all the time. There are other posts mentioned this issue too. Is it fixed in 7.0 M3?

DL-165 Adapter - Windows 8 issue - Monitor not available after restart

Hi Forum.

I am having this issue with a DL-165 USB Adapter purchased from Maplin. The adapter is connected via USB to a new Windows 8 Lenovo Desktop PC with Intel HD Graphics. I am using the adapter with the supplied DVI to VGA converter and then this is connected to the LG Flatron W1942S monitor and everything works fine following installing the software, desktop displayed & extended as desired etc.

However, once I restart the PC, the second monitor is not activated and just stays in standby, as if nothing is being sent to the monitor. I have tried unlpugging the adapter and plugging it back in, no joy. I have gone into display settings to try to get it to work and no joy.

The only way I can get it to work, is to completely un-install the software and re-install it, which is not ideal.

Does anyone have any ideas? Is this a known issue? And can it be fixed?

Thanks!

I have given up with the adapter and returned it to Maplin. I purchased another Graphics Card, and this although being an extreme solution, has solved my problem.

A fix in "a few weeks in December"? Your're running out of time! This is really NOT OK! It's more than five weeks since the last driver-update and my external graphic adapter is still just a lump of useless electronic. Get in the fight and give us some updates or timelines that has any worth.

Regards Henrik

Update:

Guess what. DisplayLink finally decides to offer a new driver (12/29/2012). And does it fix my problems? NO! It's exactly the same problems as described earlier! This is absolutely incredible! I mean how hard can it be? I must now seriously consider returning my external graphics adapter, as plugable offered me. DisplayLink is obviously going nowhere with this.
For what its worth I've attached the support files, which I managed to complete between the endless logging in and out.

ahurst 01-02-2013 07:04 PM

Come on guys....what is the progress on this?

I have a brand new $700 Dell monitor that your software is preventing Netflix and Hulu from playing on....

Your problem looked similar to others on this thread, which has been fixed in 7.1. It has been hard to reproduce internally, which is why we thought it was related to other bug fixes in 7.1.

However your logs clearly show that it is still there on your system, and we have reproduced something similar (although it happens a lot less often so looks timing related).

Our next release is at the end of January, so hopefully we will have a fix in this release as its frustrating that this is still happening.

Display Link BVU 196 Windows 8 Thinkpad Nvidia Problem Now is Fixed

I had a problem with my Display Link BVU 196 with Windows 8 on a Thinkpad T420 with an NVidia display adapter where, after receiving a Windows Update, the DisplayLink was unusable because all three displays flashed. I fixed it with the following steps:

1. Installed latest BIOS from Lenovo.

2. Installed ThinkVantage System Update 5.01 for Windows 8 (32-bit, 64-bit), 7 (32-bit, 64-bit), now available from Lenovo.

2. Uninstalled the DisplayLink software (from Windows-X > Programs and Features).

3. Plugged in the DisplayLink and let the system reinstall its software.

So after 3 months, I can use three displays again.

There are 2 problems here. The problems with video apps is covered in this thread.

The problem with some Metro apps launching with a blue screen is something different and we're investigating this. What GPU and system spec are you using as we believe it could be specific to some GPUs.

Tried new driver 7.1M1. Cleaned out the old install, restarted, installed new driver, plugged in the graphics, drivers configured and the system was restarted. Upon restart the system logd on and logs off several times and ending with all three monitors turned on but with black screens except for the mousecursor (????) which can travel on all three monitors.

This is the EXACTLY same behavior as earlier. Come on DisplayLink, get into the fight, will you. It's now more than 3 months since Windows 8 where released and you still haven't delivered a working solution for my hardware.
This is quite honestly intolerable!

So we have been trying to reproduce what you are seeing, and looking at the original logs you posted, this should be fixed in 7.1 M1. The logout issue doesn't seem to be coming up from other users either. So I wonder if there is something else wrong.

Can you post the logs with 7.1 M1 installed and the problem reproduced. I want to check its still the same issue and not something different. Probably best to post in a separate thread as this one has lots of different issues.

Hello Wim,

I've now tried installing the drivers. Curiously though, the installer never report it's done? Is that normal behavior for the installer?
After a restart I plug in the graphics adapter, and the installer ends with a demand for a restart. I choose to wait the restart, and ran the support tool. If I do allow the restart, the flashing begins when the log on-screen appears.
The tray-icon never appears in the tray???

How come that when installing vers. DL Graphics 7.1.45135 and DL Core 7.1.45125 the device manager shows Plugable USB3-HDMI-DVI
vers. 7.0.43526.0/11-20-2012 and DisplayLink Display Adapter (4301) 7.0.41409.0/09-04-2012?? Isn't that fairly old drivers?

The Device manager just shows the version of the USB video driver, which is a small part of the DisplayLink software installed, and doesn't always change between releases. The Core software version is the one you want to ensure is correct (and it is).

The logs don't show the issue, as the software hasn't started as it needs a reboot. We need to see what is logged during the flashing to check what is causing it in the logs. It might be possible to stop the flashing by stopping the DisplayLink service after the problem occurs.

Thanks

Wim

The logs show a lot of mode changes from Actual Multiple Montiors. Can you see if the problem still occurs if AMM is uninstalled?

Also, do you get any the events in Windows Events saying: “The Desktop Window Manager has encountered a fatal error (0x8898008d)”?

Thanks

Hi Wim,

No, uninstalling AMM, sadly, doesn't do the trick ;-(

I have a few 0x8898008d events, but the latest was back at December 31, 2012. Others were on December 8 and 13, November 23, October 28 (4 incidents).

Edit 19-02-2013:
The problem seems to be centered around the service DisplayLinkService (DisplayLinkManager.exe). If I disable this service (it sometimes apparently disables automatically?) and then start it up, all the flashing and log off occurs. The tray-icon never shows up.

I have attached a new set of support-files, I don't know if its any help.

Regards

Henrik

Ok, I install this file: DisplayLink_7.1M1.exe

I get two new directories:

C:\Program Files\DisplayLink Core Software (~40mb)
C:\Program Files\DisplayLink Graphics (~12kb, practically empty)

The following device is listed in Device Manager:

USB Display Adapters - Polaris2 USB Dock (version 7.0.41409.0)

Plug in the Dynadock V and get constant flashing. Have uninstalled and reinstalled more times than I can remember, have tried running as admin, have updated every driver on my laptop, run the install with antivirus disabled and enabled, no change.

I'm concerned about the empty Displaylink Graphics directory, and possibly the driver version.

Any ideas?

Jason
