Also, make sure you are using the "High Performance" power profile, rather than "Balanced" when plugged in. This could also slow down our software's performance. Wim |
After some playing around, including the pre-release driver Wim posted and doing the crazy USB 3.0 driver hack, the mouse lag problem is almost gone for me. I think it's close enough that I'll be able to look past it while we wait for a rock solid driver. If no docking were like running a game at a constant 60 frames per second, it now feels like 60 FPS with an occasional dip to 50 FPS. Not terribly significant, but it's there.
You know what the biggest difference has been? As mentioned by Wim, changing the power mode to High Performance. It's strange, though, because my Balanced profile has everything set on the highest performance settings when plugged in. The High Performance profile must do other stuff under the hood that can't be controlled with the UI. When I switch to Balanced, the mouse will skip around when moving over Outlook. In High Performance, it's pretty much as smooth as when not docked. Weird, but I can handle having to switch when docked. Obviously it's not ideal, but it works. Give it a shot and post your results.
|
So the development BUILD posted by Wim is newer than the 7.2M1 posted on the displaylink website? I too have the mouse getting stuck randomly for a few seconds.
Edit: UPDATE Ok so the BUILD is newer and supposedly fixes the mouse freezing issue but brings back the horrible screen rendering. Minimizing a window or switching between classic and modern UI (Windows 8) is just quite bad. The mouse pointer speed also suffers. *Sigh* |
Not posting to refute the experience of others -- but my install of the development driver is still going strong on my Lenovo Twist with Windows 8 (64-bit). For the record, my earliest install of the Windows drivers was M0, I've manually run the DL install (vs. using Windows update) for the M1 update, and I never attempted the USB driver tweak, despite M0's problems.
Granted, my install is still fairly stock, but the differing experience of others here is a little disconcerting. It'll certainly give me pause with future software updates, as things appear to be somewhat frail... |
Dell XPS12 with Targus Dock - mouse lag fixed
Just wanted to update - not going to install this beta driver since my issue is fixed... Simply using a new dongle and mouse (one not shared with my keyboard) has helped! Not sure of the exact root cause but the mouse is back to normal.

Edit: With the next release of drivers can we possibly have some more acceleration as far as mouse pointer sensitivity goes? It's good now but there is that slight light feel of slowness with the pointer. I am using the High Performance power profile. |
Well unfortunately with these pre-release drivers I also saw the regression to image fuzziness as well as it not helping with the lag issue. Wasn't any better or worse so I just reverted back to the standard M1 drivers now and the image fuzziness is gone. Lag is still present of course.
Heck of an issue here. I don't envy you guys for sure! |
Still having lags and a disappearing mouse cursor with my HP Envy X2 en HP 3005PR USB Port Replicator.
Tried the latest version available on the site, and the latest Beta-version mentioned in this post. No difference. Besides, if I only use the external screen and disconnect the port replicator my Envy gets an BSOD. First the display driver isn't responding anymore en than a BSOD occures. |
Fuzziness is almost too much...
Same setup as before - I've been through the beta drivers posted here as well as the updated drivers Lenovo released on their site on the 5/22ish. Still really bad.
Now all I have to do is be editing a Word document and if I type quickly (which I do usually), the fuzziness takes over the screen - pretty much impossible to deal with constantly like this and stay productive. There must be a fix coming for this? I can help with repros, logs, etc, if someone wants. I am more than happy to contribute to the solution as I have a 100% consistent repro in many common day to day scenarios. |
Still having lag issues
I have upgraded all drivers and BIOS. I'm using the new driver WIM posted and changed power settings to high performance.
Lenovo X1 Carbon 3444-52U Windows 8 Enterprise |
Yep.. still laggy and slow I am afraid. I am on high performance power plan, beta build, Win 8 Ent.. heck I tried every single driver they have listed.
I hope you can fix it. |
Still having issues. Fuzziness is gone w/ latest drivers, but mouse still freezes all the time. Ugh so frustrating. It's been months.
Lenovo X1 Carbon Touch. Win 8. Lenovo USB 3.0 Dock. Latest drivers/bios. |

Are you using a wireless mouse? If so, try sticking the receiver on an USB extension cable. That made all the difference for me (still don't quite know why, as the receiver was plugged into a presumably interference-free 2.0 port). I don't know much about the Lenovo dock, other than that the reviews on Amazon scared me enough to scoop the Plugable instead. Given that they ultimately all use the same driver set, I'd be surprised if Lenovo could have botched it up that badly, but then again... |

(sidenote: how the hell did they agree to this protocol with that large of a glaring bug) I was using a wireless mouse, but stopped months ago because of that interference nonsense. I'm now using a wired one. my mouse lags and jumps across the screen instead of moving smoothly. I have to choose to either use the mouse and dual monitors and suffer, or try to get my work done on a 14" screen. ugh. This is been going on too long. |

Sorry to hear that your rodent experience is still poor, even with the wired mouse. Is there any latency with, say, reading/writing to a USB key or hard drive? I wonder if the bus on your Lenovo dock is behaving poorly entirely, or just with HID devices... |
It's so bad I can't get my job done.
Something happened recently. Now my computer is basically unusable while docked. The mouse lag is insanely bad to the point that it jumps across the screen an inch at a time. The network performance is degraded so webpages and files load very slowly. Moving windows around the screen stupidly slow. It was working ish for the past few weeks and the mouse would only freeze once every few seconds now it is like I'm using a 10 year old computer even though it is a top of the line lenovo.
It has been MONTHS since this problem was identified. The amazon reviews show that everyone hates this crap and its ruining your reputation. Please give this problem the attention it is clearly widespread and clearly a major problem. I can't do my job because of this and that isn't okay. As I'm typing this sentance the characters are bunching up and appearing in groups because the shitty displaylink software can't keep up with the input. It s currently using 8-10% CPU and all I'm doing doing is typing on a webpage. It feels like I'm working over a shitty VNC connection on dialup. I'm running the latest drivers (according to lenovo's driver update software) I'm up to date in windows update I'm running the latest usb 3.0 dock driver from lenovo's site I'm running the latest dock firmware I'm running the latest beta drivers from wim on this forum I've got power management set to high performance mode I stopped using a wireless mouse and am using a wired one I'm running the latest graphics drivers I don't know what else to try, I'm at your mercy. Please fix this. Please. |

While my initial experience with the Plugable UD-3000 was a little rocky at first, it's been operating very well recently. I frequently swap between my MacBook Air and the Lenovo Twist, and things generally don't miss a beat (the exception being the missing USB 3.0 sound on the Mac side, coupled with some wired ethernet quirks on the Mac). GigE, Logitech Wireless mouse, a power hungry IBM Model M mechanical keyboard (with PS/2 to USB adapter), 1920x1080 DVI display... All just fine. While I jokingly referred to Lenovo botching things in an earlier post, perhaps it's not a joke after all -- given that Lenovo has nearly smashed their solid IBM heritage to bits, it wouldn't be entirely surprising. Perhaps Wim, or the other DL guys here, can possibly suggest whether something Lenovo has done (fatally in the hardware, or perhaps in some custom firmware for their dock) could contribute to the misery that's posted here. |
Quick question for all affected users:
Are you using one monitor or two? I'm using two and I'm thinking maybe it's a USB bandwidth issue on Windows 8? |
Quote:
A single uncompressed 32-bit DVI signal should consume about 3Gb/sec -- the DVI/HDMI spec has provisions for 10Gb/sec, however. Clearly, 2 X 3Gb would outpace USB 3.0's 5Gb/sec, but... my understanding is the DL drivers are compressing the video signal prior to sending out over USB. In addition, I assume they're only transmitting deltas, making bandwidth consumption fairly low. My only evidence of this is the fact that an older USB 2.0 computer runs acceptably well in the same configuration... |
X1 Carbon Touch /
Windows pro 8
Upgrading to 7.2 MI display driver seemed to fix the mouse lag, but introduced (much worse) intermittent screen blurriness. Can last anywhere from a few to many seconds.. Have experimented with : changed DisplayLink manager priority to high Swopped out wireless mouse / keyboard for wired ones. Upgraded BIOS (and all other upgrades via Lenovo System Update) Don't really know where to go from here. Its enough of an issue to make working on a separate display impossible. |
Dvi-d / dvi-i
Switching from the bottom port to the top port fixed this issue [holding thumbs]. not sure what would happen if i tried to use a second display
|
I've got the issue whether I use one external display or two. Same behavior.
|
Same here (Lenovo X1 Carbon). Even after updating to 7.2 build above - mouse jumps are still an issue. Changing the power plan to "High performance" might help a little. Fuzzy image problems are "solved" after Windows restart.

Hey everybody! I just read this whole thread. I have been frustrated for months with the same issues as everyone else. Here's my setup:
Lenovo ThinkPad W510 with BIOS 1.45.1.21 Intel Core i7 Q720 @ 1.6GHz (8 logical processors) 4GB RAM Win8 Enterprise 64-bit NVIDIA Quadro FX 880M with driver 9.18.13.2000 from 2013-04-18 Intel(R) 5 Series/3400 Series Chipset Family USB Enhanced Host Controller Renesas USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller Lenovo USB 3.0 dock with driver 7.2.46733.0 from 2013-03-19 (DisplayLink) Lenovo USB 3.0 to DVI monitor adapter with driver 7.2.46733.0 (DisplayLink) DisplayLink Display Adapter (4311) with driver 7.2.46733.0 (DisplayLink) DisplayLink Display Adapter (4302) with driver 7.2.46733.0 (DisplayLink) Microsoft Natural Wireless Ergonomic Desktop 7000 Microsoft Natural Wireless Ergonomic Keyboard 7000 Microsoft Natural Wireless Laser Mouse 7000 USB extension cable to put Microsoft Wireless 2.4GHz Receiver v1.0 inches from keyboard ThinkPad Display 1600x900 Lenovo D221 Wide DVI monitor (1680x1050) Lenovo D221 Wide DVI monitor (1680x1050) Lenovo L220xwC DVI monitor (1920x1200) All the latest Lenovo driver, BIOS, firmware updates installed via Lenovo System Update 5 I have experienced the horrible intermittent fuzziness on my monitors. At times the fuzziness would affect one monitor at a time but at other times it would affect all monitors at the same time. And at other times the intermittent monitor fuzziness would go away completely for a while. But when my computer is working properly, I'm very hesitant to undock it or shut it down in fear that the problems will return. I have also had very frustrating mouse freezes and keyboard unresponsiveness where keystrokes are missing. I tried using a USB extension cable to put the 2.4GHz wireless receiver inches from my mouse and keyboard but that hasn't helped. I have noticed that if my cell phone (HTC Evo 3D) is anywhere near my keyboard, it seems that the keyboard and mouse problems get worse. I have the latest drivers and firmware installed for the Lenovo USB 3.0 dock and I installed the latest DisplayLink drivers directly from DL. I also have the latest video driver directly from NVIDIA for the Quadro FX 880M. I set my power plan to "High performance" and it does seem to have helped somewhat but not completely resolved the issue. The "Processor power management"->"Minimum processor state"->"Plugged in" setting is at 100%. Also, I've tried running everything through the single USB 3.0 connection back to the ThinkPad W510. In other words, I have only the Lenovo USB 3.0 dock plugged into he ThinkPad and then all other USB devices, audio, Ethernet, DVI connections are all running through it. The reason I run it this way is that I found that when I plugged other USB devices directly into the ThinkPad (such as hard drives, iPod, Android phone), it would cause the displays (connected to the Lenovo USB 3.0 dock) to flick off to black temporarily. It looks like this idea wouldn't apply in my case since my eXtensible USB 3.0 Host Controller is "Renesas" instead of "Intel"? http://plugable.com/2012/12/01/windo...st-controllers And yes, this is USB 3.0 2.4GHz wireless interference is VERY interesting: http://www.displaylink.com/support/ticket.php?id=340 I already have my 2.4GHz keyboard/mouse receiver about 3 feet from the ThinkPad W510 (with several USB 3.0 ports) and the ThinkPad USB 3.0 dock and yet I still get interference that causes the keyboard and mouse to not work consistently. I could, for now, plug the 2.4GHz wireless receiver into the ThinkPad W510's USB 2.0 port. That might help. But going forward, I thought I'd only be using one USB port to connect to all my peripherals. I will be getting a Lenovo ThinkPad Helix soon and was planning to connect it to the USB 3.0 dock. I wonder if it's okay to have the USB 2.0 2.4GHz wireless receiver connected to a USB 3.0 port at all? I haven't tried the attached 7.2M1 "with freezing fix" DisplayLink drivers yet. I'll probably try that next. In theory, is there any reason that I shouldn't be able to run multiple DVI displays off a single USB 3.0 connection (currently I have 3 external DVI displays) as well as a USB 3.0 hard drive, USB 2.0 hard drives, keyboard/mouse, webcam, GigE Ethernet, USB audio? |

Edit: I downloaded it and found that it's 7.2.48041.0, which is newer. The build date is 2013-05-16. I'll try that now then. Okay so I've tried installing 7.2.48041.0 but I can't get Windows 8 Enterprise 64-bit to use these drivers. It said it installed successfully and rebooted but Device Manager still shows Driver Version 7.2.46733.0 from 2013-03-19 installed. I've even tried uninstalling all Lenovo USB and DisplayLink drivers, telling Windows to delete the drivers, rebooting, and then reinstalling from this installer but it still keeps putting back the old drivers. I'd love any tips about how to get the latest drivers installed. |

OK - There seem to be a number of different issues being raised in this thread, but with the same symptoms.
For those that are still seeing mouse lag (or more correctly, the screen freezing for a second or so when moving anything around the screen) can you try the 7.4 beta for Windows 8.1 This includes a further fix for this issue, that seems rarer, but could be affecting some of the users on this thread: http://displaylink.org/forum/showthread.php?t=61769 Thanks Wim |
I had some of the lag and fuzziness, tried the beta drivers and pc would not boot at first, then started turning on and off the USB 3 docking station. Completely removed these 7.4 drivers and installed the ones from the web page 7.3. With the high performance setting I can live with it. Not sure what causes 7.4 to go crazy. Will try again on next release.

I have updated to the latest BETA driver, works OK, but still laggy and slow.
I am running a Lenovo Helix Win 8 Pro Lenovo USB 3.0 Dock, using LAN, both DVI, and 2 USB 2.0. 2x Lenovo 1920x1080 monitors All drivers and firmwares up to date It works OK for me. Screen slows down some times, scrolling is universally slow. Moving my scroll wheel, pauses before actually scrolling down. The whole desktop experience feels slow running on this dock. Mouse is slow, always hesitates when moving. Actually has a delay when you move you mouse over icons in the task bar. It is usable, just barely, but not enjoyable at all. |
Just installed the 7.3 drivers. For now I'm not seeing any lag on my external monitors. Things seem to be working much snappier.
I'll update later with more time under my belt with these drivers. |
Interesting find: I get lag with certain applications/sites. For instance, if I open the "Wunderlist" website (using IE or Chrome) I get very noticeable mouse lag. Other websites on another tab (say Google News) show no lag. That's what happens on my external monitors. If I move the browser window to my laptops native screen the mouse lag totally disappears.
So it seems that some sites/applications could be using some sort of code that's just really unfriendly to the Displaylink Drivers. Pretty weird... |
An update for me.
It seems to have settled down. After running for a day, my mouse is at pretty much normal speed. Any lag isn't noticeable anymore unless I really look for it. setup reminder: Lenovo helix, Lenovo USB 3 dock, 2x 1920x1080 monitors, using the gigabit LAN and 2 USB 2.0 devices. Only real slowdown I get now is when transferring large amounts of data over the LAN, also through the dock, it will get a bit fuzzy, but not a big deal. Thanks for all the work. Ash |
I'm experiencing exactly same issue (big lag in mouse movements). I've installed latest driver but still no help.
Setup: - Lenovo X1 Carbon - ThinkPad USB 3.0 dock - 2 screens running 1920x1200 - Gigabit Ethernet cable connected - Wireless mouse and keyboard receiver connected to the dock - DisplayLinkManager v. 7.3.49122.0 Some observations (I didn't bother read through all of the posts in the thread so sorry if there are some duplicates): - DisplayLinkManager eats up ~20% CPU (seems mostly kernel time) - Updated driver doesn't seem to help at all - lag is gone if I connect mouse / keyboard receiver directly to the laptop (not through the dock) - with no receiver DisplayLinkManager CPU usage is down to 3~5% For now I'm happy with the workaround (connect mouse and keyboard receiver directly to the laptop), but it'd be really nice if this issue got solved. |

Then the problem is nothing to do with DisplayLink, but USB interference as covered here: http://kb.displaylink.com/340 Wim |
Hi Wim,
Thanks for the reply. You're right. I misinterpreted the problem since it started as I had mouse connected to the USB 2.0 hub connected through the ThikPad dock (which was I believe caused by the fw). I then connected to directly to USB 3.0, problem persisted (or even got worse) so I updated the firmware. Now it is connected back to the USB 2.0 hub and the problem doesn't occur. Thanks for help. Regards, Lukasz |
I've read through a good portion of this thread and wanted to add my experience.
Setup a Yoga 13 for a user yesterday, their config is: Yoga 13 Lenovo USB 3.0 Dock Display Link 7.3 drivers Two 27" Samsung monitors at 1920x1080 Only things plugged into Dock were keyboard/Microsoft Arc mouse (wireless) Mouse lag was bad, it made the setup unusable. I found the article about Intel's study on 2.4ghz devices and USB 3.0 so I switched out the wireless mouse to a wired one. User said the lag is much better and hasn't reported it as being an issue still (yet). So, if you are having lag issues and using a wireless mouse then start by swapping it for a hardwired one (as Wim has suggested). |
I also have the issue described in the first post. Brand new Lenovo x1 carbon running on windows 8, USB 3.0 hub, 2 displays connected with wired keyboard and mouse.
I experienced a very unpredictable mouse lag, very sluggish performance while moving around active windows. Then I followed the instructions here: http://www.displaylink.com/support/ticket.php?id=346 and the effects have gotten from bad to worse - the external monitors now do a mini-blink whenever I type anything on a keyboard and occasionally there are graphical glitches (similar to ones when you overclock a graphics card too much). Of course, in addition to very slow performance. :( Is there any help to this issue finally? Edit: Fixed - the problem was that the hub was connected to the USB 2.0 port instead of USB 3.0. The X1 carbon has 1xUSB 2.0 and 1xUSB 3.0 connector. Not both are USB 3.0 :-/ |
I have the issue, have un-installed the older version, installed the latest but still sloppy display and mouse response on my 2nd screen.
|
Issues mitigated
Config:
Lenovo Carbon X1 (non-touch) Windows 7 Home Premium 64 Lenovo USB 3.0 Hub Logitech AnyNet wireless mouse and keyboard 2x external Samsung 24" 1900x1200 monitors via hub via DVI 1x external Hanns-G 17" 1400x900 monitor via mini HDMI-VGA converter directly from laptop I've been struggling with mouse and keyboard lag across all three external screens, regardless of whether I use the wireless mouse or the laptop's built-in touchpad and keyboard. I'm running the latest Lenovo drivers for the laptop, the latest BIOS update, the latest USB Hub software and firmware. The issue of mouse and keyboard lag seemed to be affecting everything I did on my laptop so long as I was plugged into the USB 3.0 hub from Lenovo. Turning off monitors reduced the lag but didn't eliminate it. I've applied the suggested power settings, I've moved my wireless mouse to an extender and kept the receiver far from the USB 3.0 cables and ports. I've also plugged the mouse into the secondary USB 2.0 port on the left side of my chassis, far from the USB 3.0 cable. On a hunch, I went into the BIOS and changed my USB 3.0 speed settings from "Automatic" to "Enabled." With ALL other fixes suggested in this post now applied, I now have a fairly successful setup with 4 monitors. I can run video on one monitor, a web browser in another, and an excel document in yet another. This is excellent. However, I notice that SOME web sites cause a little bit of lag. I'm not sure this has ANYTHING to do with DisplayLink or my multiple monitor setup. Sites that have busy scripting like Facebook or NBCNews seem to be the easiest sites to replicate the problem. However, simple sites like Google or Reddit don't cause any lag. So, without further adieu, I'll confirm this problem resolved for me. Please let me know if you have any questions about my configuration if you'd like to attempt to emulate my blissful world of mediocrity. :D |
