Windows 8 - DVI not working
Thank God I found an active thread about this got damn docking station.
Ok, I have a Dell XPS 14z and just installed Windows 8 Professional using an external monitor (LCD is recently broken so I'm just using external monitor until kit comes in). Currently, the laptop is connected directly to my ASUS monitor via HDMI cable. I've installed the latest driver from the Targus site. However, EVERY TIME I connect the DVI cable to the docking station, the system freezes until about 15 seconds after I disconnect it. Didn't have this issue with 7 of course, just 8. I've tried re-installing to no success. USB ports work fine -- mouse, keyboard, external HD are all connected to docking station and work fine. It's just the DVI display that isn't. The times when I thought it wouldn't freeze, my ASUS monitor just has the backlight showing with nothing on it. Please help... |
It's weird that the whole system is frozen. Do you just mean the screens are frozen or it really is the whole OS (can you turn num lock on and off?)
Would be good to see your log files if its possible to gather when the DVI screen is connected. If not, them just after the problem has occurred. Wim |

When I get home this evening I will to ahead and run the diagnostics tool for you. |
How do I run and capture logs to post?

Additionally, today I uninstall the driver completely and the software, and try installing it again via Windows Updates (because it just sits there in the optional updates regardless of whether it's installed or not), and I get errors.

What's up with that? https://dl.dropbox.com/u/2526790/dis...k%20errors.png |
Just did some more troubleshooting... So I basically plugged in my DVI cable while still using the HDMI cable, and the screen started flickering (with the input set to HDMI still). However, switching the input to DVI just gave me the "No DVI signal" message...
I then switched back over to HDMI, and all I seen was the backlight on the screen with the mouse (and the circle next to the mouse as if something's loading)... After a couple minutes of moving the mouse and seeing it show the busy mouse icon, entire PC froze. Couldn't num lock, move mouse, or anything. So here I am again connected via HDMI. |
Now that DisplayLink decided to renew their domain, can anyone continue to help me? I"m still sitting on HDMI right now. Thanks.

Bump.
Anyone? Is there not any support team working in these forums? My goodness. It's bad enough I hate this stupid docking station already, and now it's even harder getting support? |
Do you mean you are using HDMI from the dock or HDMI from your PC? I really need the log files as described here:

1 Attachment(s)
For HDMI, it's connected directly to the laptop. For DVI, that cable is hooked up to the docking station.
My log files are attached. However, I do not believe I could run the tool while the DVI cable is connected simply because the system freezes after about 20-30 seconds connecting the DVI cable. |
Any update? Anyone?

Bumping again, sigh.

Wow. What's going on with the support here? Do I need to put this docking station on Craigslist? I'm really starting to lose confidence on getting this issue resolved.

I don't have any solutions but I feel your pain. I bought a Dell XPS 15 with the Targus 3.0 dock. Dock works fine (mostly) except connecting external monitors. When I enable them the laptop screen flashes (strobes) continuously, and nothing ever displays on the external monitor.
I've spent DAYS on the phone/email with Targus, Dell, and Intel. I've uninstalled/reinstalled all drivers countless times. At least the XPS reboots pretty quick. The latest rumor is that the DisplayLink driver and the NVIDIA driver aren't playing well together. I realize Windows 8 is new, but the combo of Dell XPS + Windows 8 + Targus 3.0 dock == JUNK! I'm seriously considering returning the XPS and dock and going with a MacBook Pro, luckily I'm still within the return window. |

Not only that, but I've recently just cracked the LCD screen on it... so you know at this point I'm really considering replacing that screen and selling the laptop. As far as the Targus docking station, I'm about ready to toss that crap out of the window. I would feel very guilty if I sold this to someone for even $20. |
I wouldn't feel bad selling it for 20 dollars. As long as I explain what a POS it is, look them in the eye and say "DO YOU UNDERSTAND WHAT I'M SAYING?!", and they say yes. THEN I wouldn't feel bad. But I'd probably only ask for $10.

Just downloaded the latest DisplayLink driver from the website (released 11/12/12) and this fixed my issue with the DVI input not working.
Thank you DisplayLink for fixing this. I think I'll keep my laptop now instead of getting a Lenovo + Lenovo docking station. |
