Asus Varidrive with Asus Zenbook Touch UX31A Display issue
2 Attachment(s)
Hi,
Just received my Asus Varidrive... after connecting it to my Asus Zenbook Touch UX31A everything seems to work (LAN, USB hub, DVD drive) besides the display extension... With or without the DisplayLink software I downloaded from here http://www.displaylink.com/support/downloads.php, I always get the same image (a sort of chessboard with white and black squares) on my secondary screen (see attached). I tried to connect my secondary monitor through VGA or HDMI but with the same result... I'm running Windows 8, updated the BIOS to the latest version available (219) and updated the Intel HD Graphics 4000 drivers to the latest version available on Intel's website (9.18.10.3165). When firing up the DisplayLink Support Tool and running the System Compatibility Check, everything seems to 'Pass': Pass: Basic mode support Pass: Device attached Pass: Device started correctly Pass: Graphics driver date Pass: WEI is above recommended 3 Pass: No Other USB graphics software installed Any idea, because now I'm getting stuck... Unfortunately, Varidrive support on the Asus website is close to inexistent... I'm also including the logs of the diagnostic tool. Any help would be more than welcome. Thanks. |
Am I really the only one in the world with that weird issue ???
|
Hi,
I'm looking into this and will get back to you when I hear more. Thanks, James |
I am have an identical issue with a UX32VD and the Asus Varidrive. Right down to the checkered display.
|
Hi,
Can you attach the logs from your setup? Details on how can be found here: http://www.displaylink.com/support/ticket.php?id=269 Thanks, James |

If it matters, this is the second Varidrive I tried. I experienced the same problems with the first one, which ASUS RMA'd for me. This is the replacement unit. |
Hi,
Thanks for the information. We're working with Asus on this issue. Thanks, James |
Thanks James. Can you keep us updated? Asus hasn't been terribly forthcoming with help or information, unfortunately.
|
Hi,
Update to follow shortly, just clarifying the details. Thanks, James |
Hi,
Asus are now aware of this issue which is that the serial number is not programmed on your docks. As a result the device is coming up in a test mode hence the white and black pattern. Please return these docks to Asus for a replacement stating that the serial number has not been programmed. https://www.asus.com/support/Service...All-Countries/ Feel free to quote me if needs be. Thanks, James |
FYI,
I contacted Asus and asked for a replacement... Process went quite smoothly and today I received my new unit which works like a charm! Thanks for your help. Kind regards. A. |
Hi,
today I received my ASUS Varidrive and experienced the same problem. VGA is outputting checkered (black-white) screen. Is there a way to put the device in "normal" mode by myself without the need to send it back to ASUS? Or is this device useless? |
Hi,
I'm following up on on this now. Thanks, James |

Any news or follow-up, yet? Thanks, M. |
Hi,
I would recommend you send this back for a replacement as this can't be fixed outside of Asus. Thanks, James |
Just got my drive back from Asus.
-It still fails in exactly the same way it did before sending it in, with the checkerboard patter -It included a shipping invoice, but nothing to indicate service -Their tech support seemed unaware of this issue when I discussed it with them. James - please help. Who can I talk to over there who knows what the hell is going on? |
Hi,
I'm following up on this now. Thanks, James |
Thank you James.

Same problem here.
The thing is I'm from Argentina, and I've paid almost the same price in taxes to get my Varidrive into my country. It's not that simple for me to return it. Any other solution? |
Hi,
I'm afraid that a return is the only option. I'm actively working on this issue so please bear with me whilst I try and sort it out. I'll update you again when I know more. Thanks, James |
I too have this isue.
I have the same problem. I got the first varidrive replaced by Amazon and it has the same issue. So far I can not get any one as ASUS that can help me.

Solution
I think this is a solution:
It needs a firmware update and burning the SN to the Varidrive. English: Firmware version 0904: http://support.asus.com/Download.asp...SNBAP_0904.zip Drivers OR_I_WIN8_WIN7_64_V301: http://support.asus.com/Download.asp...N7_64_V301.zip Instructions: http://support.asus.com/Download.asp...structions.zip Spanish: Firmware version 0904: http://support.asus.com/Download.asp...SNBAP_0904.zip Drivers OR_I_WIN8_WIN7_64_V301: http://support.asus.com/Download.asp...N7_64_V301.zip Instructions: http://support.asus.com/Download.asp...structions.zip Let me know How it goes |
It worked
Yes I installed the update and it all works fine. Your links seem to take me to the Spanish site though.
But you being from Argentina that makes sense. At least I can comprende pocito espanol. LOL |
Unfortunately, this doesn't work for me. I'm prompted to enter the SN, which I do, and the program just loops back and prompts me to enter the SN again.

I found english downloads:
Firmware version 0904: http://support.asus.com/Download.asp...SNBAP_0904.zip Drivers OR_I_WIN8_WIN7_64_V301: http://support.asus.com/Download.asp...N7_64_V301.zip Instructions: http://support.asus.com/Download.asp...structions.zip --------------------- On one of my Varidrives it worked like a charm. However, when I got back home and tried in the second unit, I got this message (after that screen it goes right back to "enter serial" screen): https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/s/...NSHOT.jpg?dl=1 Here's another result I got (again, it goes back to serial entry screen): https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/s/...HOT_2.jpg?dl=1 |
Asus Varidrive VGA problem
Hi,
I just have bought an Asus Varidrive in order to connect a VGA monitor to my Asus UX32LN laptop running Windows 8.1. Unfortunately, I haven't managed to get the VGA monitor up and running. It always shows a "chessboard" screen instead of my desktop. I even have uninstalled DisplayLink software followed by the clean up tool, reinstalled the latest DL Version, rebooted and the attached the Varidrive. No improvement. Windows does not recognise a second display. Any help would be appreciated - I would not like to return the dock as VGA display capability is the reason why I bought it in the first place. My setup: DisplayLink driver version: 7.7.57957.0 USB host controller driver version: 6.3.9600.17238 DisplayLink USB Graphic Device is recognised and shows, that it is linked to USB 3.0 Compatibility check of the DL Support Tool passes OK (all green). My Asus Laptop UX32LN has two built in grafic devices: > NVIDIA Geoforce 840M (driver 9.18.13.3235 Dated 2014/01/07) > Intel(R) HD Graphics Family (driver 10.18.10.3960 Dated 2014/09/29) I can provide DL support Files package if needed for review. Kind regards, Hendrik |
Any help World be appreciated
Is Asus having a compatibility problem with ist own products? Is the chessboard screen a typical sign for not recognizing a connected display?
