Can’t get surround sound

Hi

I can’t get surround sound in HDMI.

I have a Surface Pro 2 with win 8.1 and a Targus ACP70EU

When I go to Sound, Playback, mark the sound device and “Configure” I can choose Stereo or 5.1 sounds. When I select Stereo all sounds comes out in stereo as expected. But when I select 5.1 only the left and right sound comes out. The center, rear and LFE sounds just disappears.

I have installed all windows updates, all drivers are installed and I have the latest DisplayLink software.

Hi,

Are you connected through an AV receiver?

Please attach the logs from this tool:

Thanks,
James

Hi

Sorry I didn’t see your reply before today. Missed to turn on notification.

Yes it is connected to a surround receiver.

Just for info. The surface also has a mini Display port. Then I use that output to the receiver the surround sounds works fine.

The System Compatibility Check turned out all green. Attaching the log file.

Thanks

Thanks - apologies - should have asked before - what make and model AV receiver do you have?

It is a yamaha rx-v620

Thanks, I've raised this internally for further investigation.

I now have a Toshiba Dynadock U3 instead and I still have the same problem!

I have also tried with a hp laptop with win7 and the same problem.
I get surround sound from the computers then I use the displayport but not from the HDMI port on the USB-dock.

Has anyone for sure been able to get surround sound from the HDMI port using displaylink?

I attach a new log.

We have just tested this on an Onkyo HT-R538 which is what we have for system test and 5.1 audio works. Is 5.1 definitely selected under the speaker configuration?

(Note: we show Stereo and 5.1 only)

Thanks for verify that it is possibly to get 5.1 throughout HDMI. May I ask what OS and with docking station you used?

I only have stereo or 5.1 Surround and I have tested both. The sound comes out different so I’m sure.

I will try to find another receiver to test on. But because it works then I use the computers displayport I think the receiver is fine.

It was checked with a Targus ACP70 dock on Windows 8.1 (to check the original problem posted in this thread).

I have now tested on a newer receiver.

Then I use the display port the receiver say it get a Dolby D signal.
Then I use the dock and Displaylink the receiver says “Multi in”.( So the 5.1 sound works on the newer receiver)

I thought Displaylink just pass-through the sound, but it seems it process and changes it in some way. The source is Dolby D.

I have tried to google it and I think it makes it to PCM multichannel. I don’t think my old receiver can handle PCM multichannel so that should explain my problem. And if I understand it right, if I set the source(computer/Displaylink) to Bitstream it will pass the signal unprocessed to the receiver.

Have I understood it right and is it possible to set Displaylink to Bitstream so it just pass-through the signal?

I've checked with the engineers and yes, your understanding is correct. It is PCM only, not compressed bitstream.
