Sporadic disconnection/reconnection (Win 8.1)
Like several other users here, I have the problem that a couple of times per day, my docking station (Warpia Dock n' charge SWP240) is sporadically disconnected and then reconnected again. This happens with USB 3.0 (I do not have any USB 2.0 ports on my laptop) with Windows 8.1 64bit, all updates installed. The only USB devices hooked up to the docking station are mouse, keyboard and an HDMI display.
I have DL driver version 7.6 M2 installed. For every disconnection, I found the following event in the event log. The vendor/device ID indicates that this is related to the installed DisplayLink devices: Event 4, Kernel-ShimEngine Flags [1024] were applied to device [USB:USB\VID_17E9&PID_4307] - class [USB]. Flags source: applied through compatibility database. - <Event xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/win/2004/08/events/event"> - <System> <Provider Name="Microsoft-Windows-Kernel-ShimEngine" Guid="{0BF2FB94-7B60-4B4D-9766-E82F658DF540}" /> <EventID>4</EventID> <Version>1</Version> <Level>4</Level> <Task>0</Task> <Opcode>0</Opcode> <Keywords>0x4000000000000000</Keywords> <TimeCreated SystemTime="2014-09-16T07:48:14.154572300Z" /> <EventRecordID>1171</EventRecordID> <Correlation /> <Execution ProcessID="4" ThreadID="6852" /> <Channel>Microsoft-Windows-Kernel-ShimEngine/Operational</Channel> <Computer>BF3</Computer> <Security UserID="S-1-5-18" /> </System> - <EventData> <Data Name="DeviceName">USB:USB\VID_17E9&PID_4307</Data> <Data Name="DeviceClass">USB</Data> <Data Name="FlagSource">1</Data> <Data Name="Flags">1024</Data> </EventData> </Event> Best regards, Bernhard |
Hi,
As soon as the issue is seen please attach the output of this tool: http://www.displaylink.com/support/ticket.php?id=269 Once downloaded, please run it and select "Gather Support Information" When you reply please select "Manage Attachments" from the "Additional Options" section below. From there select Upload and navigate to the output of the tool which will be in a folder called "DisplayLink Support Files" on your desktop. Thanks, James |
This happens to me several times a day. I have isolated the issue to be a DisplayLink issue. The reason being, I have tried different monitors, machines, cables, etc. And it appears that people experience this issue on DisplayLink docking stations (mine being a Toshiba Dynadock U3.0 PA3927U-1PRP). I currently have a Dell XPS 12, and 2x Dell U2412M displays.:mad:
Currently I have 2 external monitors. 1 connected via DVI and 1 connected via HDMI. I also keep my laptop monitor active, effectively presenting 3 monitors. When the issue happens, all monitors flash/flicker, with my 2 external monitors appearing as if they were unplugged from the docking station (unplug noise exists). This resets all of my open windows (browsers and applications) to the laptop monitor. Then I move my mouse over the boundary of the laptop monitor and it re-activates the external monitors which then play a noise as if they were just plugged in. I must manually drag windows back out to the external monitors and re-size them appropriately. I'm not sure why, but in the last week or two, the frequency of this issue has multiplied. I downloaded the support tool and, ironically, the moment I enabled advanced logging, the symptoms reproduced. I clicked "Gather Support Information" and it immediately crashed, however it shows about 70% in the screenshot. I verified there are files including dmps in the directory, so I will upload these logs now. Be aware, I have had this docking station for about 20 months and have ALWAYS had this issue. It just happens much more frequently now. |
Requesting an update, please.

Hi,
Can you attach those logs that you've gathered? Thanks, James |

I'm not sure why they didn't upload before... Attached again.

Hi James,
Here's the output I captured just after a disconnection. BR, Bernhard |
Hi guys,
Can you both try disabling the USB power management settings shown in this article? http://www.fixedbyvonnie.com/2013/11.../#.VCF_1_ldV8E Let me know how you get on. Thanks, James |

disabling the USB power management settings
I tried the advice above, and it helped, but did not eliminate the problem. It made it usable, though over time, the linked screen does turn off. I can turn it back on by removing and reinserting the USB. Any other thoughts for a more complete fix?
|
Hi,
Can you also disable the USB Selective Suspend settings as mentioned in the article? Thanks, James |
USB selective suspend setting
To clarify, what I did was change the USB selective suspend setting as outlined. The result was that I can at least use the linked screen for a period of time. However, it still does cut out periodically, though I can restart it by reinserting the USB.

I'm having the exact same issues as Julia. It's randomly disconnecting. I've tried all three of the USB ports on my laptop (MSI GS60 Ghost Pro) and it's done it on every one. After reading through this thread I followed JamesH instructions to edit the USB Selective Suspend. I will let you know if it resolves the issue or not.
Edit: It just happened again while I was playing the game The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing. I attached the displaylink support tool zip to this post. |
Hi all,
Can you check this FAQ for additional suggestions when you encounter disconnects and reconnects http://www.displaylink.com/support/ticket.php?id=370 Thanks, James |

My laptop has a ring light around the power button; if the light is blue it's on Intel graphics, if orange it's on Nvidia. Every time this disconnect happens the light is blue (intel) I notice it switch to orange (nvidia), all the displays flicker on and off, everything returns to normal then it switches back to blue (intel). While gaming it's the reverse: starts orange, flickers, goes blue, back to normal, then orange again. James i'm wondering if it's something to do with the switchable graphics and displaylink drivers working with some sort of power management forcing the computer to swap between the two graphics processors. It would be as if the computer is connecting to a whole different video card each time. |
The displaylink driver for 9/29/14 seems to have fixed the issue.
|
My issue is still not resolved. I successfully ran through the steps outlined in this article: http://www.displaylink.com/support/ticket.php?id=370
I continue to experience this intermittently. Some days it will only happen once or twice, other days it'll happen 4-5 times in an hour. Please investigate, as this is horribly frustrating. Do not ask me for logs again, as I've already submitted them and you've failed to speak to that. |
Status & next steps, please?

Hi,
Try the latest Touchpad driver as the current one has been causing BSODs on your coomputer: http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/...&categoryId=IN Does this happen on all USB ports on your computer? Thanks, James |
still an issue
I have done everything posted here, and still have an issue. Yes, it is with all USB ports. I would be grateful for any other solutions.
|
I have this latest driver installed.
1. Why is this a suggestion? 2. Why are you alluding to a BSOD? I've not experienced a BSOD, nor have I mentioned it... |
reverting to previous driver seems to have fixed or at least improved the issue
I remembered back to when this issue started for me, and it was August. I have tried both the 29 Sept driver, and 18 July driver, and have issues with both. I decided to uninstall, and revert back to the 6 June driver, and I have been able to enjoy my second screen again without problems, at least so far.
|
Not gone, but....
Ok, reverting to the June driver has improved, but not eliminated the problem. At least, I can actually use my second screen, and reboot when it becomes a problem. A more permanent and complete solution would be most appreciated, however! Thanks!

still an issue
Sorry for all the posts, but the solution of rolling back to the June driver did not last - I am still having an issue, and am very frustrated, as I would really like to make use of my 2nd monitor. I appreciate any additional help that could be offered.

I take it back. It's still not resolved. In 30 minutes of gaming (Tomb Raider) the disconnect happened 4 times. Eventually crashing my game.
|
It happened ~10 times in 3 minutes. Warpia SWP-240

Amazing that no one's commenting on when they plan to fix this. We've supplied screenshots, steps to reproduce, and logs. What more must we do to enable you to do your jobs in making stable software?
|
I know this may not help everyone but I contacted the manufacturer of my USB dock (Warpia) explaining this issue and they have agreed to send me a replacement dock free of charge. We'll see if it could be a hardware fault with the dock itself.
|
I've been using a new dock (tested working according to Warpia) and it has done the exact same thing. I did find however that only connecting one extra monitor (so laptop screen + one 24" monitor via DVI) will make it work without fail. The minute I plug in my second monitor (DVI to HDMI adapter) it will do the sporadic disconnect.
|
Hi all, here's another suggestion: I had two displays, one connected DVI to DVI port on my USB dock + monitor 2 using DVI from the monitor -> dvi to hdmi adapter -> hdmi port on the dock. So I changed the DVI cable with hdmi adapter to an HDMI cable (no adapters) and i've worked for three hours with no disconnects.
