Mouse Lag on attached screen in macOS Sierra
I'm running a dev preview of macOS Sierra and noticing some mouse lag on my attached screen. I realize this is a preview and not fully supported yet, but is this a known issue?
|
Yes Sierra dev previews are slow. This has happened for the dev previews of the last two OS versions as well.
For the moment we consider this to be expected. We'll be much more worried if the issue continues after a few public betas. Carlo |

I am running macOS Sierra 10.12 Beta (16A238m) Public Beta on a MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Late 2013) Processor 2.6 GHz Intel Core i5 Memory 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3 Graphics Intel Iris 1536 MB Storage 500GB PCI-E SSD My DisplayLink device is a Dell D3100 triple display. I have version Version: 2.6.0 b1 (73011) of the DisplayLink driver. I am experiencing very slow mouse movement/lag as anurse has reported. I also have observed slower draw times to monitors connected to my Dell D3100. E.G. Maximising/minimising windows, youtube video playback, etc. Take this with a massive grain of salt as I do not have hard data to back this up with, so it could be placebo. However, the mouse lag is very REAL and noticeable. :) EDIT1: macOS Sierra PB(Public Beta) 2(Version 10.12 Beta (16A254g)) just hit. Will update this post with anything new after I get some time with the new PB. EDIT2: After roughly 5 days with PB2, I can say nothing has improved from Apples side in regards to my usb 3.0 Dell D3100 triple display adapter/dock. Very slow refresh and extreme mouse lag. I've decided not to use my D3100 with this laptop for normal day to day tasks, and only reporting feedback here. Once a generally available build of macOS Sierra is out and/or new drivers come out from DisplayLink, ill try using it again for my daily driver. |
Thank you for the details.
We've been seeing very different performance depending on the Mac. If you experience performance worse than on El Capitan can you please post here the Mac model and beta build you're using? Thank you! Carlo |
Mac model: MacBook Air (11-inch, Early 2014)
beta build: 2.6 Beta 1 Bad performance on the DisplayLink screen, mouse lag, slow window content after black windows... |
Yeah, I'm still seeing performance problems in the first public preview as well, but I realize that may still be expected :). It's almost exclusively mouse lag for me, though I did see some video playback stuttering too.
I did encounter this when I was on the El Capitan previews too so I do expect it somewhat, just keeping the data flowing ;). The lag was not present in the final release of El Capitan though. Hi All,
To recap these are the issues we're seeing with the developer beta 2: - Slow on most systems - Black content when windows are moved from an accelerated framebuffer to a DisplayLink (or other USB) screen. Black goes away refreshing the window contents. - Permanent wrong colour/corruption on the left side of window titles If you see anything more please let us know. We have raised bugs with Apple but as usual we'd like to increase their priority: don't want to get stuck for one year or more like for other OS regressions. If you see the same things, please do raise bugs at bugreporter.apple.com. On the bright side Apple has fixed the following: - The main mirror issues of El Capitan - Picture in Picture (was still broken in the public beta) Fixing mirror means that you can go back to version 2.5.1 if you want to try it without all the workarounds we had to put in place. Best regards, Carlo |
That sounds like pretty good news Carlo
Have you heard if those fixes are being backported to 10.11.6 too, or will we just have to forge ahead with Sierra if we want those? |
Hi all, here to rain on the parade.
Been using Displaylink hardware (in this case, the Plugable 3.0 docking station) since 10.10. Lived through the 10.11 dev beta with all that trouble, and 10.12 comes with a new host of issues that I didn't see in previous betas or here on this thread. This is a fresh install of Sierra off a USB boot drive running the 2.6 Beta 1. Stuff I've seen that you have too:
What is new:
Thankfully the ethernet works just fine as its one of my primary use cases for the station, but no USB HIDs makes life difficult. |
Same issues here as everyone else. Lag, lockups, etc.
Dev preview 3 16A254g MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2014) There is a delay waking from sleep as well. If you need any logs or things like that, I can send them |
Same here, mostly just noticing a very laggy mouse on external screens so far.

Hi All,
Quick update from us about this issue. We're investigating the problem, aiming to deliver a solution in a beta ASAP and releasing before Sierra of course. Cheers, Carlo |

Is this days or weeks before we see a alpha/beta driver? |

Any way to expedite getting the Sierra driver out (even as a dev beta)? No pun intended ;-), but right now DisplayLink is "the weakest link" (humor!), so uh... would appreciate an idea when I can work with my dual displays again :-) |
These issues still exist on latest macOS public beta (16A294a). Though some graphical issues are resolved. But the lag still exists and is mostly unusable.
|
Seems it gets better with the latest beta (16A304a).

MBP 15" mid-2012 running Sierra 10.12 public beta 6 and DisplayLink 2.6 beta 2 (2.6.74951) with three external monitors (one HDMI on TB port, two DisplayLink on Lenovo ThinkDock).
In previous Sierra betas and with previous DisplayLink drivers (2.6 beta 1 and previous), the system was basically unusable with the DisplayLink displays connected. DL displays went black and came back every few seconds, had serious graphic glitches, system would crash to login screen when activating Mission Control, windows contents were corrupted, had very severe mouse lag. With 2.6 beta 2 and 10.12 public beta 6 things have improved considerably. All of the above problems have been corrected with the exception of the corruption of windows contents, which remains as bad as ever. Unfortunately, that's a showstopper so I still can't use Sierra on this system. I've attached two screenshots of a displaylink.com page running in Safari, one with the content displayed correctly (window was on HDMI display) and one with content corrupted (window was on DL display). Most webpages behave similarly, and see similar problems with many other programs (App Store, iTunes, Photos, ...). |
Thank you rsmercer
We believe performance with the 2.6 beta 2 and latest Sierra beta to be still slightly worse than El Capitan but we're talking few percentage points, probably due to extra logging in the OS to be removed by release time. There are some significant issues left in Sierra though, especially on the latest platforms. I plan to create a Sierra specific FAQ on support.displaylink.com to address them. So far what we've seen is: - Internal screen blank at login with password which USB screen connected - Incomplete rendering for Safari windows and Apple Store - Corruption on app window while moving it from internal to USB screen - Some apps are corrupted in top left corner while on USB screen Has anybody noticed any other new issue in Sierra? Kind regards, Carlo |
Installed Sierra GM and DisplayLink 2.6 Beta 75598 from Sept 19. Still unusable for me. Safari windows corrupted in same way as my last message, and I'm still crashing to login screen when activating Mission Control or changing spaces. Since I use Safari windows on my DL screens constantly and switch spaces and/or activate Mission Control dozens of times a day, that means I can't upgrade to Sierra. If the new MBP that will hopefully be announced soon can drive three external screens I guess it will be time to upgrade. I'm getting really tired of the chaos that happens with DL screens with each new macOS release.

I'm now running at about 30 frames per second I would guess which is alright for standard operations. Fantastic work, DisplayLink! |
Me too similar problems but can switch spaces with three finger swipe to the side, the screen dims and then reappears when i sideswipe.
The mouse flickers and lags, and the cursor icon changes irregularly to a double hairline (2 cursors) also closing the safari browser often fails but not sure if that is related to this monitor, or just an OS Sierra Bug. Using the mouse is the biggest problem, on this Mac MIni, I am using it as a single main display, but the same problem occurs when i attach another display (Sony tv 36 Inch). The screen doesnt start on boot either unless i fiddle pressing the on button a few times Mac mini (Late 2012) Processor 2.3 GHz Intel Core i7 Memory 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3 MB169B+ Display 15.6 Inch (1920 x 1080) (set to 1366 x 768 px, because otyherisw i cant read tinytext) I have found that i can improve it in /accessibility/display and deactivate 'reduce transparency' and 'reduce motion' and 'increase contrast' The mouse is a bit smoother then but the toolbar top of browser flashes gray and white when i type in this comment box |
Problem with magic mouse 2
My magic mouse is very slow.
I use the OS High Sierra 10.13.6 and my macbook pro early 2011, but with SSD and 16MB Ram. With a simple mouse at USB port it works in normal speed. I`m using two monitors, the same model, Samsung T24C310, one by Display Port USB and the other one in the thunderbolt port. Thanks for any help! |
