Using Display Link Entirely in Userland

I have a slightly weird use case for the display link adapter. Instead of treating it as an additional display used by the linux DRM I would like to be able to upload single images over USB and have them be displayed over a display port. This needs to happen at a rate of about 1 Hz.

A lot of dev time has been sunk into fixing issues with graphics drivers and configuring the system to display things appropriately. I'd like to potentially reduce future work by switching to using a display link chip.

Is any support for using a program entirely in userland to upload images?

The main goal is to reduce the software complexity of going from a bitmap to having the image displayed on a screen.

While it's not easily doable today, as the driver was created with desktop use case in mind (so, it interfaces with DRM), this does sound like an interesting use case.

Can you raise a suggestion at https://support.displaylink.com so we can see how many people would like to see a feature like this?

Thanks
Michal
