144Hz feels like 60Hz
I'm using Lenovo 40AF dock with 2 HDMI-connected Gigabyte M27Q displays with 2560x1440 resolution.
On MacOS DisplayLink supports native resolution which is nice, but every refresh rate above 60Hz feels like 60Hz. I can compare this by changing refresh rate and by connecting one of displays directly to the Mac. Display connected directly to the Mac runs well with all refresh rates above 60Hz and the change is perciptible. When I connect this dock with displays attached to the windows machine both displays' refresh rate feels correct and refresh rate change is perceptible. Displays show that display is using 144Hz in both cases (in-display menu). I suspect it may be due to screen recording in 60FPS, but I may be wrong. This is for sure a bug in MacOS DisplayLink Manager. I'm using 1.8.1 version. I also saw reddit thread where more people had similar problem with other displays, but I can't find it now. |
DisplayLink officially supports at most 60Hz.

Electronic pages 13 and 14 of the manual list the supported resolutions and refresh rates. The maximum refresh rate supported for resolutions over 1920x1080 is 60Hz. |
The problem is this feels like 60Hz also on lower resolutions with high refresh rate on macOS.
And it works with 144Hz on linux and windows in 2560×1440 and feels correct. |
