OSX Mojave AOC Monitor

My Mac Mini with OSX Mojave 10.14.6 needs its HDMI monitor to startup and login, and only then does the USB3 AOC displaylink monitor work.
I'd like to only use the USB3 AOC monitor, but can't boot up or login the computer without seeing what's going on.
I have downloaded the latest displaylink driver a few times now.
any ideas?
