Black screen

1 Attachment(s)
Dell Inspiron 7720SE, external monitor is Samsung SyncMaster B2230HD. All working on Windows 8 before applying 8.1 upgrade (64 bit).

Got latest drivers for NVIDIA & Intel graphics as applied by Windows Update after the 8.1 upgrade.

Installed the v7.4 beta but the external monitor is black, but 'alive': I can drag windows off to it but they disappear.

I have attached the diagnostic report.

now working

Came in this morning and my external monitor now works. No idea why!

not working again

Came in today now not working again, same issue -- screen is 'alive' but is black -- I have it on extended desktop and I can drag windows to it but they don't show. All updates are applied.

Do you need the diags again?

Also in Device Manager the driver version for the Targus USB Video is DisplayLink 7.2.47873.0. I thought it should be 7.4.48853.0, same as the version in Add/Remove Programs.

Hi,

When this happens can you try the following?

Restart the DisplayLink service
- bring up the metro screen
- type "services"
- select Settings
- view local services
- select DisplayLinkManager
- select restart the service

Thanks,
James

I assume you mean DisplayLinkManager service?

When I restart it (I do Win+R and type services.msc), the extended screen does the same as the fault -- it shows 'PC 1920x1080' for a few seconds which shows it is 'live' but it remains black. Occasionally when trying things you see the cursor duplicated to the screen but not anything else.

Is the driver version not being 7.4.x what you would expect?

Thanks

Rick

Hi,

Thanks for trying. I'll raise this internally for further investigation.

Yes the driver versions will differ and this isn't a problem.

If you do find a way of recovering from the blank screen let me know!

Thanks,
James

Will do! [that's 8 characters, has to be 10, it is now...]

I downgraded my NVidia driver. Windows Update in Windows 8.1 had upgraded it to 326.01, I've downgraded to the latest released one from the NVidia site which is 320.49.

Similar to another poster the extended screen is blank (a bit grey rather than black today) until I push something over to it when it comes to life, i.e. I don't get wallpaper on it after logging in.

It seems to only work every other day!
I have played with Graphics Drivers as I am getting video freezes (for a second or so) on streamed and downloaded video (Demand 6 & BBC iPlayer) but that looks to be an 8.1 issue.
I have a laptop with 2 graphics cards (no idea why or how they work together). Both were updated by Windows Update after I upgraded to 8.1. Downgrading both (one at a time) has not helped the video problem. Downgrading the Intel HD Graphics 4000 driver back to 9.18.10.3165 (the pre 8.1 driver) is OK when DisplayLink is not plugged in but I get the constant jumpy screen on the laptop display when DisplayLink is plugged in. Upgrading the driver to the 8.1 provided version (9.18.10.3200) fixes this.

However the extended monitor is again 'working but black' today, whether I use Nvidia driver 320.49 or 326.01.
