The 10.13: High Sierra Thread

For those on the developer release, please post here your tales. As this is a maintenance release for Sierra, and with the new Metal 2 architecture and their announcing changes to the Window Server right in their presentation, and the fact that it's not a public beta, there WILL be issues with the new version and current Displaylink drivers.

To maximize the help to DisplayLink, make sure you provide the following info:
MacOS Version (the first release is 10.13 17A264C)
Computer Make and Build Year (ex. MacBook Pro Late 2012)
Displaylink Driver Version
Displaylink Device
What You Are Experiencing
What is Expected

Also expect DisplayLink to not put major effort into supporting dev builds, as the beta will change a lot, very rapidly, and patching Apple issues only to be broken in a week isn't fun for anyone.

Shanesan 06-06-2017 03:44 PM

So I guess I'll start with what I got:

MacOS 10.13 17A264C
Macbook Pro Late 2012
DisplayLink 3.1 (uninstalled and reinstalled)
Device: Plugable USB 3.0 docking station UD3900
Experiencing: A black screen on the Displaylink-run monitor, but the mouse can be seen on it. Mouse runs very smooth.
Expected: Stuff more than the mouse on the display.

Carlo 06-07-2017 09:47 AM

Yes no pixels, but the contents are rendered if you take a screenshot. This means that we don't get updates from the OS. Analysing this now.

Another issue is the window server crashing when going to mirror. The same issue is reported to happen with eGPUs so we're optimistic on this being fixed soon.

There's another minor issue, a crash of one of our processes.

Has anyone spotted anything more?

Cheers,
Carlo

Hi Carlo,

Love the fact you guys are tackling this as hard as you did with the Sierra beta.

See OP for specs.

Sometimes when the display is connected (over HDMI if it matters), the computer begins to heavily lag, mouse jumps around at around half a frame per second on all displays, and functionality of the computer becomes zero (clicks don't register, etc). After disconnecting the displaylink device, the system stabilizes.

Once I can reproduce this, I will try to provide process information...

jamesbrobinson 06-12-2017 10:27 AM

MacOS Version: 10.13 Beta (17A264c)
Computer Make and Build: Year Mac mini (Late 2012)
Displaylink Driver Version: 3.1
Displaylink Device: Coredy USB 2.0 Display Adapter
What You Are Experiencing: Installed drivers (fresh). Display is detected. Mouse pointer can be seen and moves on the screen, but no windows can be displayed. Just a black screen.
What is Expected: Additional screen to be visible as a desktop.

jpmiller03 06-12-2017 10:45 PM

Reporting in, the same

Black screen but registers in the Displays prefpane properly, and shows the mouse cursor.

10.13 Beta (17A264c)
MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2016)
2.7 GHz Intel Core i7
16 GB 2133 MHz LPDDR3
Intel HD Graphics 530 1536 MB

Some news on the bugs we have with Apple.
They main issues have been closed as duplicates of Apple bugs. So Apple is aware and is hopefully working on solutions.
As usual, it's useful for everyone with a developer account to raise the same issues to increase the priority for Apple.

This means that on our side we're left with looking at workarounds.

Cheers
Carlo

jpmiller03 06-19-2017 09:28 PM

Do you think there'll be a beta? I'd like to be a part of it if so.

jamesbrobinson 06-22-2017 08:52 PM

Now on developer beta 2 of macOS High Sierra.

Exactly the same issue. Screen is identified, mouse pointer works on the screen however it's an entirely black background, and I can't put anything on that screen.

Lasse S 06-30-2017 08:54 AM

Just installed the first public beta (which is the same as Developer Beta 2 Update 1) and I'm experiencing the same issues as everyone else - responsive mouse cursor but black screen.

macOS: 10.13 Public Beta 1 (17A291m)
Mac: MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2014)
DisplayLink Driver: 3.1
DisplayLink Device: Dell D3100

M. Holkamp 07-07-2017 03:28 PM

Black screen but registers in the Displays prefpane properly, and shows the mouse cursor.

Macbook Pro (Late 2013)

jpmiller03 07-10-2017 10:57 PM

Same after Developer Beta 3

Still have black screen that is registering properly. Also plugging a display into the DisplayLink hub crashed the logged in session back to the login screen.

I just updated to Public Beta 2 and I have the same problem - if I connect a display to the DisplayLink dock something crashes and I get sent back to the login screen. Everything else in the dock works though - ethernet, USB, etc.

Carlo 07-14-2017 04:37 PM

Hi,

If you are logged out when connecting the DisplayLink screen(s) then you've likely hit a macOS bug that is triggered by mirroring screens. It's probably the same issue it's currently happening with the eGPU kit.

On some systems mirror may be already set for the external screens so every time they are plugged in you'll automatically hit this issue.
A possible workaround is to delete all persistence information, so at the next plug in a default extended state can be chosen by macOS.

This is how to delete persistence information from Terminal. Please note that the following commands if entered incorrectly may delete any file on your system:

To clean user preferences:

rm -f ~/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.windowserver.*.plist

To clean global persistence:

sudo rm -f /Library/Preferences/com.apple.windowserver.plist

After a reboot the display settings will reset to default, which should be extending to the right and not mirroring.

Best regards,
Carlo

Morning Carlo! I followed this instruction to see what happens. The following result occours:

Running on 17A306f
Run command, disconnect DisplayLink device, restart the computer.
Computer boots normally with just the laptop and Apple Monitor plugged in over Thunderbolt.
Plug in DisplayLink with HDMI monitor attached.
WindowServer crashes, brings me back to login screen. Login screen is sky blue with a mild gradient, the background is not the standard background.
When trying to log in the WindowServer crashes and sends back to login. Repeat until you disconnect the HDMI and login screen returns to normal and login process is successful.

Hi All

For those wanting to try a new driver for High Sierra, it is now available in the Alpha forum here:

http://displaylink.org/forum/showthread.php?t=65395

Wim

M. Holkamp 07-15-2017 12:38 PM

I have installed the Alpha driver and so far so good.
The second screen gives me the right picture and the mouse is moving.
Monday at the office i will test the DisplayLink with 2 monitors.
Keep you posted.

Lasse S 07-17-2017 11:10 AM

I've installed the 4.0 Alpha as well and have been running it a couple of hours now. So far everything seems to be working great - dragging application windows to the DisplayLink screen and moving them around is very smooth. Maybe not quite on par with my Thunderbolt 2 connected displays but very close ;)

One thing I noticed was that the macOS menubar renders correctly now - no more faulty transparency and greyed out menu items are also readable now. I assume it has to do with the Metal optimizations.

All in all I'm very satisfied - great work guys! 👍🏻 :)

Built-in screen blank after unplugging in clamshell mode

With the DisplayLink plugged in USB w/1 monitor attached and a 2nd monitor attached HDMI via thunderbolt, the built in screen remains completely blank and requires holding down the power button and rebooting to get the built-in display working. This happens when in clamshell mode and the DisplayLink device, power, and thunderbolt are disconnected, then shortly after the built-in screen is opened. This only happens when DisplayLink is plugged in. If there is only a thunderbolt monitor and it is in clamshell mode, it wakes correctly.

Hi,

You can find the latest drivers at http://www.displaylink.com/downloads

Some manufacturers can take a while to update their own download page.

Hi. I hope it's OK to join this thread.

I re-installed two Mac's (MacBook Pro, 2012) with macOS High Sierra and installed the newest DisplayLink software. I am using an HP 3005pr Port Replicator with two screens.

Everything was working well under Sierra, but my screens are not working under High Sierra. They are even not detected in System Preferences. The other functions, USB and Ethernet, worked plug and play as they should

Hope you can help me.

Device not recognized...

macOS High Sierra version 10.13
MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2014)
Display Link v4.0.0 (just downloaded)

My Display Link display worked fine under Sierra. Upgraded to High Sierra, uninstalled the old version, installed the new version. No picture at all as the device is not visible in the USB section of the System Report. Tried connecting it to a powered USB hub, still not recognized.

Any next steps or am I stuck waiting for a driver update?

Chuck

Exactly the same at my side.

Hi,

If your device is not visible as a USB device then we need to analyse the HW and host controller configuration, it's not a driver matter as the driver has nothing to connect to.

We need to reproduce this as soon as possible. The best thing would be for you to send us the information gathered by our tool: http://support.displaylink.com/knowl...rticles/755301

We'd still need to know which kind of device (model and manufacturer) you are trying to connect and any information about how the device is connected (adapters or hubs).

Thank you
Carlo

Melvin 10-02-2017 02:00 PM

Carlo - I am using the very latest driver for this device, which is U224-001. The latest driver is over a year old and is 2.6. Sounds like folks with other drivers are experiencing similar issues.

That did the trick! I didn't get the popup as part of installation, but uninstalling and reinstalling got me to where I could click the "Allow" button and enable the extension.

Thank you!!!

Black screen with High Sierra install

I have the latest-get mac mini, exporting to several screens at our church, and the USB 2.0 adapter outputting to a screen. I recently updated to 10.13 and updated to the latest software for the adapter.

Upon startup, all screens are dark, with no response. Once I unplug the adapter, I'm able to log in again and access everything, but plugging it back in immediately hijacks the system.

Any ideas?

I have been in contact with Tripp Lite support who say that the driver is currently only supported through 10.11. No word on when it might be addressed.

2nd External Display not working

I've just installed the 4.0 driver and did not need to perform any unblocking - no prompts, no message to allow or anything.

I've found that if i have 1 external display connected, everything works fine. The moment I attach a second external display, the system tries to go into Mirrored mode and given that it is not currently working, everything fails. Is there a workaround for this?

For a workaround, try this FAQ: http://support.displaylink.com/knowl...-mirror-issues

For the bug itself, it would be very helpful if you could raise a defect with Apple.

I am unable to use the displayLink (even though it is detected) in HighSierra.

I have a 13" MBP retina core i7, with 2 external displays. When I plug in the DisplayLink, I get a "No Signal" message on the display. The display shows the additional screen as an option in "Displays" and the System Report shows:

Product ID: 0x4301
Vendor ID: 0x17e9 (DisplayLink (UK) Ltd.)
Version: 32.97

I'd play with different resolutions in System Preferences->Displays to ensure a valid resolution is selected.
If this fails, please send us the logs: http://support.displaylink.com/knowl...rticles/755301
