1.5.0 Beta - Still no M1 additional HiDPI resolutions?
 

I just downloaded the 1.5.0 Beta driver (running OS 10.5.2) on my MacBook Pro M1.

I saw the following in the release notes and got excited:

- Introducing additional inferred resolutions on 4K monitors: 2560x1440 and 3008x1692

Unfortunately, with my LG 32UL950-W 4K display there are still no HiDPI (only low resolution) options for these resolutions.

Is this a HW limitation of the M1 chip? Or a SW limitation in macOS? Just curious if this is something I should ever expect to be enabled.

Same here for me. No HiDPI. I'm waiting 2560x1440.

My understanding is that inferred modes are different from HiDPI support. In the release notes for the 1.5 BETA application --> https://s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/a...ease+Notes.txt

Under the 'Known issues and limitations' section DisplayLink states:

"- Some HiDPI mode are not available on DisplayLink screens (29526)"

Ok, I was wondering that as well. The other resolutions are available in low resolution mode (and look terrible).

Yes you can add to the year old request to add HiDPI to 2560x1440 if you want here. May never happen but you never know...

I just also installed the Beta1 on my M1 MBP. Finally my desired resolution of 3008x1692 appeared. But in Low Resolution looking awfully terrible. So still no HiDPI?

Yup, beta 1.5.0 on M1 and still no "look like 2560x1440" option – only low-res 1440p option (same as in latest stable release).

Heck, if I had known about this issue before I would defo skip the DisplayLink adapter purchase. I really do hope it's going to be fixed asap.

Its almost been a year since the request so i would not expect that it is coming.

Yeah this is a huge disappointment. Would not have bothered with a display link dock if I knew this beforehand. Just wanted a good PD Usb c solution and it has essentially downgraded my monitor.

I wish they could enable some sort of passthrough mode if you are only using one monitor.

A happy compromise?
 

I'm assuming most M1 Mac owners that bought a DisplayLink dock did so for its ability to output to dual monitors. My setup is I have a M1 MBP, 1x 1080p monitor and 1x 4K monitor.

I have found a happy compromise in having the DisplayLink hub drive my 1080p monitor, and a separate, US$25 USB-C to HDMI adapter to drive the 4K monitor. (Link).

With this setup, I am still able to use dual monitors, and the 4K monitor can now use all of the HiDPI / retina resolutions I was missing when it was connected to the DisplayLink dock. This is a happy compromise as it means the DisplayLink was still a good purchase (can't do dual monitors without it) but for a few dollars more I get the retina resolutions on my 4K screen.

This won't help you if you're only using one monitor or 2x 4K monitors but I hope it helps somebody.

Yes appears display link only really works at 1920x1080 and anything else gets blurry. Really n point trying to use Displaylink on a 4k monitor as you have found. 1080p the text is really to large but any other resolution other than native is lowres and native has too small text because of the way the Mac scales. Looking forward i hope the m1x has support for dual displays as this will solve the problem finally. (I hope).
