I have installed the latest driver however all I get on the screen is a lot of vertical lines - any idea how to solve this?

Could you try posting a photo, please?
Because the way the image is transmitted between the computer and the adapter, the likelihood of a software/driver issue is as close to null as possible.

I would recommend having a look at the cable. Is it properly secured? Is is a good quality cable (shielding)?
