DisplayLink fighting with HDMI
Mac Studio M1 Ultra, max RAM, OS 15.4.
DisplayLink 1.10 DL providing signal to Projector. HDMI providing signal to VX-1000 processor for LED Wall. Thunderbolt providing signal to external Dell monitor. Everything is great. Update OS to 15.4.1. On restart, the 3 displays seem to be in a fight over who gets to be main display. I’m not familiar with DL Manager, but I notice the three options - Mirror, Extend, or the middle option, to assign display to an app. I don’t know what that does, so I choose it for the HDMI. The Mac stops seeing the HDMI display. It does not appear in Settings. Nothing brings it back. (I followed Apple’s directions on booting into safe mode on a silicon Mac multiple times, but have been unsuccessful in that.) HDMI simply wasn’t there. Except it was! The VX-1000 processor recognized that I was sending it an HDMI signal, even though the Mac couldn’t see HDMI. And when I rebooted, the HDMI would act as Main Display…until I logged in, when it would disappear again. But HDMI remained unavailable. Finally, I uninstalled DL, using the uninstall app, and installed DL 1.12.1. Still no bueno. So I uninstalled DL again. This time, there was no uninstall app. (?) But I deleted the app and restarted. That worked. HDMI returned. Of course, now I didn’t have access to my Projector. So I reinstalled 1.12.1 again. Current status: if I enable the Projector, I lose HDMI. If I disable the projector, HDMI is good. I need them both to work. Help, please? |
Same here
I am running three monitors and my main is via HDMI. When I connect the DisplayLink monitor, (Elgato Prompter) my main monitor goes missing all together and freezes on screen. If I load the display settings from another monitor, it looks like it was completely replaced by the displaylink monitor. It would be great if they could fix this asap!
Thanks! |
Hello TimMcDaniel,
Could you please share more information about your devices which are connected via DisplayLink, and the way they are arranged? You can try to connect the external Dell monitor by HDMI and the rest of your devices by DisplayLink. |
I am having the same issues and while I have not found a resolution to the HDMI issue I have found that I swapped out the HDMI cable for a 2nd DisplayPort cable directly into my Dell UD22 dock and my 3rd monitor capability was restored. I hope this helps. It is very wack.

I went through the exact same nightmare after updating to 15.4.1 – HDMI was just gone. What finally worked was removing everything DisplayLink (not just the app, but also files in /Library/Extensions/ and ~/Library/Preferences/). After that, HDMI came back, then I reinstalled the latest DL and only used "Extend" – no weird app assign.
Be sure to reset NVRAM and SMC after every reinstall – it honestly helps untangle the display mess sometimes. ;) |
Hello tadeusz7,
Thank you for taking the time to share your detailed solution. |
any update on when this will be resolved to bring back the HDMI port?

Hello fredo,
Here you can find some more information about HDMI and D22 case -> https://www.displaylink.org/forum/sh...ad.php?t=69602 |
I was able to work around this by switching to a Display Port connection instead of HDMI. If you're not already using both DP ports on your UD22, a DP cable is pretty cheap.
