While updating the kernel to, say, 5.4.0-54, I get:

Building module:
cleaning build area...(bad exit status: 2)
make -j8 KERNELRELEASE=5.4.0-54-generic all...

After the update to kernel 4.15.0-58, I had to uninstall, reboot then install again.

Seconded

Basically every time I update the kernel, I have to
* displaylink-installer uninstall
* reboot
* ./displaylink-driver-5.2.14.run
