Have a look at RDM or SwitchResX both allow you to select from a much wider range of resolutions then OS X gives OOTB. RDM is free, SwitchResX is not but also allows you to define custom resolutions...

same here, deleting files doesn't help

I have two rotated displays and have the same issue as others after having upgraded to 10.7.3. I've tried deleting the files:
