I've been getting that using UDLFB (the old driver) in the ESXi virtual linux machine.

When it occurs it is generally in the browser and the only fix is to restart the browser.

Surely on Linux you just do:

fbset -fb /dev/fb1 -g 1024 600 1024 600 16

(or /dev/fb0 as it may be).

My monitor doesn't support that resolution so I can't prove that...
