Turn off mirroring
Try turning off mirroring, extending the desktop to all displays, and making sure "Displays have separate spaces" is enabled (under "Mission Control" settings in System Preferences).

I think the issue is related to the way Apple is...
I think the issue is related to the way Apple is handling secure/protected content when a DL display is connected. It appears that they prevent any secure content from passing to the workstation...

Thanks for the explanation, that makes sense. I agree that it should still allow for watch unlock and HDCP-protected content playback on supported screens.,
