I had the same problem initially with Mint 18 and Cinnamon. I found a video somewhere targeted at Ubuntu but it works in mint.

Add these lines to /etc/environment...

This is the same thing I'm seeing with Mint 18 on 1.2.65 driver. Very slow response to typing, highlighting with mouse, dropdown menus, etc, etc. Makes it very challenging to work efficiently.

Workaround is to set laptop as primary display. not ideal
