This is an admittedly strange bug to report.

I have a triple monitor Windows 8.1 system, Lenovo W520 laptop, set up like this:
1920x1080 left (HDMI from dock)
2560x1440 center (DisplayPort)...

Turns out that I can only turn off my primary 2560x1444 DisplayPort connected display (straight from the laptop's DisplayPort) by it's power switch, not by turning off the power strip it's plugged in...
