I have that model and it works for me on a new Macbook Pro 15" using 10.7.1 and 1.7b3.

Maybe it's the device. Can you try a different computer?

I can't seem to change my background from gray to anything else. The main monitor (mini display port) shows fine.

Definitely try without the computer's LCD open so you only have two with the menu bar on the display port monitor.

It is definitely slower. The mouse pointer staggers on a Macbook 15" 2011 with SSD. Not nearly as smooth as with SL.

With Lion GM on a 2011 15" Macbook, there are two issues I've found.

1) The isight camera doesn't work. It just says in FaceTime (and trying to capture a signature in Preview) that no camera...
