Yeah this works, I've had to recommend this to users in our offices. We also use this workaround with 4k screens, as there seem to be issues with display scaling at 4k res on Macs....

In the past, using a very similar set up, Macbook pro 2017, D6000 and x2 1080p screens I was able to use one screen in portrait with zero lag, this would have been pre Mojave 10.14.3...
