See below the results of your proposed investigation, James.

Is DisplayLink software installed correctly?
Yes, "Displaylink Core Software" and "DisplayLink Graphics" are both listed in Control Panel's "Program and Features", both version 7.3.49122.0. I installed the latest software available ("DisplayLink USB Graphics Software for Windows", version 7.3M1).

Is the DisplayLink service running?
Yes, it's running and starts automatically.

Does the USB device appear in device manager?
Yes, there are two USB devices under "USB Display Adapters", being 1) "DisplayLink Display Adapter (430A)" and "HP USB 3.0 Port Replicator", both version 7.2.46733.0.

Has the USB device booted correctly?
I think so. Hardware IDs for "DisplayLink Display Adapter (430A)" are USB\VID_17E9&PID_430A&REV_0105&MI_01 and USB\VID_17E9&PID_430A&MI_01 and for "HP USB 3.0 Port Replicator" USB\VID_17E9&PID_430A&REV_0105&MI_00 and USB\VID_17E9&PID_430A&MI_00.

Do you have the latest graphics driver installed?
No, but in the mean time I updated the drivers and now I have the latest drivers installed. However, the problem persists.

Do you have the latest USB 3.0 host controller driver installed?
According to Windows 8 Update, my system is up to date.

After checking the above have you attached the log files?
Yes, additional information:
How often does the issue occur? Always.
How do you invoke the issue? N.A.
How do you recover from the issue? N.A.
Was the issue present in older versions of DisplayLink software? I don't know. It's the first time I connect a USB3 HDD to the HP 3005pr.
How are you connected to the DisplayLink device? Directly or through a USB hub? Directly.
