Unless you remove the old unrecognized devices from Device Manager, you only get the device recognition tones on the first insertion of the cable, it turns out.

So, on this original, upgraded-from-Windows 7 system, Lenovo W520, cannot get DisplayLink to show in tray no matter what I try, in NVIDIA Optimus mode.

Also note that the old laptop is a Lenovo T61, with USB 3.0 card added, and operates external DVI-D monitor attached to the USB 3.0 dock just fine, with 32 bit Windows 8. It even enabled me to get the firmware on the USB 3.0 dock. That system is using Windows 8 x86 native drivers for it's ancient, Intel Integrated chipset graphics. And the Sep 2012 7.0 DisplayLink driver installed without incident, but I did use Windows 7 compatibility mode/as administrator options before I launched the executable.

So it seems likely my issue with the W520 is either::
a) related to the new ThinkPad W520's NVIDIA drivers from here:

that don't "like" DisplayLink software version 7.x
b) related to improper clean-up or uninstalls
