This post http://support.displaylink.com/knowl...r-on-install-o also suggests that I need a real hardware graphics card to use the new displaylink adaptors and will not be able to use it in an ESXi guest.

I may be stuck with my old 17e9:01d4 series 1 DisplayLink adaptor, and 16 bit colour.
