There can be several reasons to this.
Have you had a look in Device Manager to see if the device is recognised?
If so, the display may take a couple of minutes to update its firmware before the desktop is displayed. Should Windows report the product as connected, I would recommend leaving it be for 5 minutes. It takes much less time, but, if you default to lower USB speed or there is something else going on, I would like to have enough padding.
Then, should the issue persist, the third link in my forum signature indicates how to gather the logs necessary to look into exactly what is taking place in your case.
