Displaylink could still manage the open source development if it wanted to but there seems to be many more community developers that would assist to promote the product and further the market than what is currently being harnessed.
Opening up the DisplayLink drivers as open source could indeed be a potential solution to address the demand for specific features and faster development. Open sourcing the drivers would allow the community to contribute to their development, potentially leading to more rapid updates and the addition of requested features.
