Default Heads up: new Ubuntu Linux release coming

Hi guys,

I thought I owe you some news on what is happening to the Ubuntu driver here at DisplayLink.

Many of you noticed the recent activity in the open-source kernel module and library, evdi and libevdi, which are vital part of the Ubuntu driver. This is because the team have been busy working on some further Linux-related developments which we will be announcing soon - stay tuned.

However, the changes were significant enough that in order to be useful for Ubuntu as well, we do need to release a refreshed driver for the O/S that is compatible again.

With Ubuntu 16.04 being released today, we obviously aim for the release to support it, which means playing nice with kernel versions that it ships with. There are also other things that we fixed meanwhile, which were waiting for a release train - they should improve general compatibility and stability of the driver.

Although Ubuntu remains the distro we do most of our development and test against, to recognise all the effort the community has put into making the driver usable in other distributions, in the new release we will make it easier to install on something that's not Ubuntu. Thank you for your involvement in making the installer script more flexible.

Finally, the schedule. There are still a few bugs that we would love to fix for this release, to make the overall experience better. This means that while we will be late to be ready for 16.04 launch date, we expect to have the driver available soon after - in coming weeks (I personally cross fingers for first half of May).

Thank you for your support and warm welcoming of the driver - and, as always - we appreciate all the feedback and encourage to help improve the open-source parts - the evdi project is always accepting pull requests.

Best regards,
Michal
