For the curious, the fix for my MBP display is kind of expensive right now, and the Asus monitor could be used in several scenarios, including use with other PCs, so that's why I'm considering this as a temporary workaround.
I have done this with my MacBook Pro Late 2011, USB 3.0 UHD DisplayPort adapter and a conventional LCD panel. Obviously you can't see the boot process, since the DisplayLink doesn't start until the USB ports become active.
